Eight pages, containing a summary of the news of the week. Published every Thursday and sent postage paid to any address for 1.50 in advance. Published every afternoon except Sun- day by the Bemidji Pioneer Publishing Company., 2 G. E. CARSON. E. H. DENU_ HAROLD J. DANE, Editor. _———— Thank You! Following the request by the Pio- neer last night to shut of the water, the weatherman this morning turned out one of the most beautiful days of the year. Careless Children. § Owners of automobiles are loud in their complaints against children Wwho take delight in seeing how close they can come to a machine without being run over. Some are said to start from the house when a car ap- proaches and to run to the middle of the street. There they stand until the car is almost upon them or has stopped. v “Some day an automobile brake will not work quickly or a child’s foot will slip and Bemidji will have a tragedy which will stay in the minds of the people for many days,” said one driver yesterday. “Drivers of machines are careful and take no chances but often we do not see the children until ‘they are almost in the road. The parents seem to be paying no attention to this and I suppose it will take a maimed or killed child to open their eyes.” Park Board Needed. L. F. Johnson has received a com- munication from State Forester Cox to the effect that if Bemidji wishes to-take steps to secure the tract of Ruggles’ timber north of the Bemidji mill that the state may be in a po- sition to assist in the purchase. Mr. Cox further states that Hibbing is the only other city in the state which has timber of this kind located with- in the city limits and that Bemidji and Hibbing will probably receive some state aid should the timber be acquired for park purposes. About one year ago condemnation proceedings were started against the tract for the purpose of acquiring it for city park purposes. Appraisers have been appointed and the matter has dropped although the timber can not be cut until the action is fin- ished, Under the law, a city cannot ac- quire land outside of the corporate limits unless it has a park board, At a council meeting this spring, the matter of having a park board was agitated but it did not seem to be thoroughly understood why the coun- cil committee on parks could not act as well as a park board. Mr. Cox offer makes it plain that it the city is to secure the stands of Norway north of the mill and at the head of the lake it should take action in the matter at once. Few cities in the country have such magnificent virgin timber within their corporate limits and fewer still have stands, such as that at the head of the lake, which come to the water’s edge on a fine beach. Both will make beauti- ful parks. The piece at the head of the lake cannot be secured unless the city has a legally organized park board. If the council feels that the city has no money at this time with which to buy this timber, it should at least take steps to tie it up in litigation so that it cannot be cut and so lost forever.
