Published every afternoon except Sun- lay by the Bemidji Pioneer Publishing Company. @ N. CARSON. =. 3. DENT. MAROLD J. DANE, Editor. Two New Pioneer Features. For a week the Pioneer has been receiving the daily news bulletins of the United Press associations and has been giving its readers last minute news each afternoon. This service is expensive, but the Pioneer is wil- ling to pay the expense in order that its readers may have the best ser- vice possible. Yesterday afternoon, the Pioneer published a full account of the trou- ble with Italians near Milwaukee which resulted in the severe wound- ing of two men. An examination of the evening city papers shows that they were able to give the news but little space as it was received at press time. The Pioneer was also able last night to give a full story of the Cohasset bank robbery. Last week many ‘people wondered who “Scoop” was and what he would do on the Pioneer. It is still a little early for the majority of the readers to form their opinions of this little fellow. But the editor has seen the proof sheets of two -weeks of cartoons which are to come and he believes that before the month is out, “Scoop” will be the most popular man on the Pioneer. The United Press service and the “Scoop”” cartoon service have been added in order to help make the Pio- neer the best Northern Minnesota paper, Steenerson a Candidate. Representative Steenerson has for- mally entered upon his campaign for renomination, by mailing to the Min- nesota secretary of state the neces- sary documents entitling him to a place on the ballot as a candidate. Mr. Steenerson files as a Republican. In connection with his candidacy Mr. Steenerson has written a number of his friends and constituents a letter setting forth his claims to another term. = THIS IS MY 51st BIRTHDAY, Bion J. Arnold. Bion J. Arnold, widely noted as an electrical engineer and inventor, was born near Grand Rapids, Mich., Aug- ust 14, 1861, and received his educa- tion at the University of Nebraska .and Cornell University. He began his professional career as a mechani- cal engineer for a Western railway, but within a few years he resigned the position to become an indepen- dent consulting engineer. Mr. Arnold first attained prominence by design- ing and building the intramural rail- way at the Chicago world’s fair in 1893. Since that time he has been identified in a professional capacity with many engineering achieve- ments. Of late years his attention has been given particularly to the construction and improvement of street railways and subways. He de- vised the plan for electrically operat- ing the trains of the New York Cen- tral road in and out of New York City and later was appointed chief engineer to rebuild the Chicago trac- tion system at a cost of $60,000,000. Congratulations to: Prince Henry of Prussia, brother of the German Emperor, fifty years old today. Earl of Ranfurly, a direct descen- dant of William Penn, fifty-six years old today. Ernest Thompson-Seton, author, artist and naturalist, fifty-two years old today. THIS DATE IN HISTORY.
