DENU. that he will run on a platform of “correct opinions, sound advice and diligent care of the legal interests| of the state.” Before he became the attorney general, Mr. Smith was as- sistant attorney general for three years and prior to that had been a county attorney for eight years and lieutenant governor for two terms. Mr. Smith is a man past middle age, has had a wide experience with the law and is considered by his as- sociates a man of sound opinions and principles. He is a quiet man and the administration of his office runs evenly and without much public no- tice. But he is always “on the_job” watching the legal interests of the state of Minnesota. THIS DATE IN HISTORY. August 15. - 2. 1775—A British naval force made EAROLD J. DANE, Editor. An Error Somewhere, The county board of equalization has allowed an error to creep into their assessment increases. Wheth- er this was done with or without full knowledge of the facts, the Pioneer is not able to state but the fact remains that an error is plainly visible in the increase given the Crookston Lumber company. The Crookston mill is the only one in the county, with the exception of the Engler mill at Baudette, which had its assessment increased although at first it was intended to raise oth- ers. In the assessment finally made by thé board of equalization last week, the Crookston people are as- sessed for nine times as many saw logs as the Bemidji mill. The Pioneer does not stand as the advocate of any business industry in Bemidji but wants to see each one get a square deal. The Crookston and Bemidji mills are compared only be- cause both are here and both have their logs in Lake Bemidji. Both mills are running day and night but it is a physical impossibility for the Crookston mill to saw nine times as many logs as the Bemidji mill. The supervisor of assessments is said to have stated that the Crookston people have more than one season’s sawing in the lake. Officials of the company state that every log cut will be sawed before the mill closes down this fall. There is an Etheopian gen- tleman in the wood pile somewhere and it looks to many like-a delib- erate attempt on the part of a ma- jority of the board to “soak” the Crookston Lumber company. One thing is certain—the people of Bemidji are entitled to at least one man on the board of county com- missioners. A. E. Rako is commis- sioner from this district but time and again has shown himself out of sym- pathy with his Bemidji constituents. The board of county commissioners is due for a shaking up at the next elec- tion. Money for the Farmers. The creamery at Menahga paid out, $31,000 during the month of July and $275,000 during the past year for cream. Every cent of this mon- ey went to the farmers in the terri- tory tributary to Menahga. The farm- er who has three or four cows and can keep most of them fresh at one time has a source of cash income that never fails winter or summer. The creamery at Bemidji is buying thou- sands of pounds of cream a week and paying cash for it at the rate of $.25 per pound for butter fat. The farm- ers in the Bemidji territory who are not now shipping in cream must soon realize that they are losing an easily earned cash income that is as steady ag the salary of a store clerk. Kelley May File, Charles T. Kelley, publisher of the Menahga Journal, states that if C. A. Lindbergh is the lone candidate to file for Congress from the Sixth dis- trict he will enter the race “not be- cause we have any particular desire to reside in Washington but in order that the Republicans of the Sixth dis- trict may vote for one who represents the principles for which they stand.” At the head of his editorial column, Mr. Kelley has the names of William H. Taft and James S. Sherman, so it may be assumed that Mr. Kelley is a standpat Republican. To those who do not live in the Sixth district, it will be interésting to see whether or not the district is now Progressive. At any rate, if oth- er candidates would follow Mr. Kel- ley’s lead and have the basic idea of public service instead of personal gain, the common people would be quite grateful. Smith Wants Renomination, Lyndon A. Smith, at present at- torney general for the state of Min- nesota has declared himself a can- didate for renomination at the Re- publican primaries. Mr. Smith states an unsuccessful attack on Gloucester, 1812—U. 8. frigate Essex captured the Alert, the first vessel taken from the British in the war of 1812. 1818—Sir Peregrine Maitland ap- pointed Lieutenant Governor of Up- per Canada. 1846—Americans .under Commo- dore Stockton and Major Fremont captured Los Angeles. 1868—The city of Arequipa, Peru, almost destroyed by an earthquake. 1877—Chauncey Rose, founder of Rose Polytechnic Institute, died in Terre Haute, Ind. Born in Wethers- field, Conn., Dec. 24, 1794. 1890—First annual convention’ of letter carriers of the United States held in Boston. 1893—Manila surrendered to the American forces after a short land fight and a bombardment by the fleet. 1908—Ira D. Sankey, noted evan- gelist, ‘died in Brooklyn. Born in Edinburgh, Pa., Aug. 20, 1840. THIS IS MY 65th BIRTHDAY. Arthur Sherburne Hardy. Mass. [CAN Did you ever try? tion for second choice.
