Yesterday painters put on a fresh coat of paint on the Second street side of the Markham hotel. This morning it was found that the work had been ruined by thousands of small bugs which had been attract- ed last night by the street light and were caught in the paint when they touched the building. They will have to be scraped off and a new coat of paint put on., The Bull Moose Bellows. The bull moose has a right husky pair of lungs. He also hag a brain that fits the lungs. Yesterday he gave forth a big bellow. But it is one thing to bellow and another to make good. The progressive idea in Roosevelt’s “Confession of Faith” are excellent but a good many peo- ple would like to know why he had to be out of the White House four years before these things impressed them- selves on him, Tough On Walker. In the division of Cass county into two counties with “Clover” county as the new one, it appears that Cass Lake is trying to engineer matters so that the county seat of Cass coun- ty will be moved from Walker to Cass Lake. The county seat of Clover county will probably be Pine River. Here is the way the Cass Lakers have figured it out. A question of dividing the county and how it is to be divided is decided by a special ballot at a general election. There will be a general election in Minne- sota this fall. To change the county seat, it would be necessary to call a special election. Therefore, the Cass Lake boosters propose to have a special election one week before the general election. At the special election it will be decid- ed to change the county seat from Walker to' Cass Lake, the votes nec- essary to secure this change coming from the townships that wish to be parts of new Clover county. A week later, the Cass Lakers, and others in northern Cass county, will ‘vote with the Clover county people on the division proposition. By this simple method of log rolling, Cass Lake will get what it wants, and the Clover county people will get what they want—but Walker, well Walker will have little else than Dpleasant memories and the state san- itorium. The scheme makes one think of the Chicago convention. As a Summer Resort. Too little attention is paid to Be- midji as a summer resort. The city has a great development field ahead of it along that line and the lake can be turned into a great asset. If Bemidji and Irvine lakes were ten or fifteen miles away, every Be- midji family that could possibly af- ford it would have a summer cottage on the lake and the wives and chil- dren would spend several weeks there each summer. As it is, probably less than thirty per cent of Bemidji peo- ple have ever walked from Dick Por- ter’s cottage to Rocky Point. ‘Over in North Dakota, where peo- ple have to go many miles to their watering resorts, Bemidji lake has a-great reputation. It is noted for its clear and clean water, its delightfully smooth, sandy beaches, its easy shore line which makes it possible to wade out 500 or 600 feet when bathing, its good fishing, and its picturesque scemery. It is noted as being a lake safe for children where no drownings occur. Bemidji lake i3 an ideal summer lake and Irvine has not been touched. i A few years ago it was a full day’s work to get an automobile from Grand Forks to Bemidji and it could not be done at all if the roads were muddy. To come by train took many hours. Last week, an automo- bile came here from Crookston in six and one-half hours and it was a heavy five passénger machine. This means that Bemidji is much nearer North Dakota points than a few years ago. At present, there is a good auto road up the lake on the west side. The road on the east side is only fair but the railroad offers a good means of transportation. Everthing possi- ble should be done by the city to call attention to Bemidji as a sum- mer resort and to make it pleasant for the visitors while they are here. They bring in many thousands of dollars each summer and this rev- enue can be substantially increased by using a little care. THIS DATE IN HISTORY.
