HAROLD J. DANE, Editor. Advice for Clerks. The Indicator says: Clerks should be taught to treat the greatest grouch in the world with extreme tact and politeness. Some men delight in be- ing grouchy and are really pleased with the southing courtesy with which their irritable mental condi- tion is met. - Remember, too, that a grouch is frequently a good customer if handled with care. Two Campaign Phrases. “Thou Shalt Not Steal.” “We stand at Armageddon and we battle for the Lord.” These are two phrases which will be dominent in the campaign for the presidency this fall. The first refers to the shameful Chicago convention of the Republican party when dele- gates from states which cast one- third of the Republican vote named a candidate not wanted by delegates from the states which cast two-thirds of the Republican votes. The second refers to the parting of the ways in national party lines. The Roosevelt Speech. The “Confession of Faith” deliver- ed before the third party convention . this afternoon by Theodore Roosevelt should be read by every man—and woman too since the Progressives are for equal suffrage—who is in- terested in the welfare of his coun- try and who wishes to be posted on the principles which will guide The action of the third party. The plat- form will be based and Roosevelt will run for president on the princi- ples and ideas laid out in his speech today. The speech raises a paramount is- sue of social and industrial justice to wage earners. This phase of our national economic life is too apt to be overlooked by politicians who wish to deal merely with a few problems which can be handled easily and Wwhich do not vitally concern the la- boring man. Mr. Roosevelt says that the “first charge on the industrial statesmanship of the day is to pre- His ideas on this subject are in unique accordance with those of trained specialists who have long been investigating these questions, Believing that its readers are in- terested in this convention and that they may post themselves on the sit- uation, the Pioneer today prints a five column extract from the Colo- nel’s speech of 20,000 words. No Laughing Matter. At the last two meeting of the city council, sworn documents have been filed stating that Harry Gunsalus has violated state and city laws in the operation of his saloon, citing speci- fic instances and asking that action in the matter be taken. Gunsalus is at present operating under a city license and at the. next meeting of the council will ask to have a trans- fer of location issued so that he will be able to do business in the new block at the corner of Third street and Minnesota avenue. To date the council has treated the complaints as a laughing matter in spite of the assertions, by at least one city official, that “everyone knows that he has been violating the law but we won’t let the city be used as a tool by William Begsley.” It ap- pears to be plain that the action tak- en so far on Begley’s part has been more in the nature of revenge than an honest desire to see the laws up- held. The council is right when it refuses to be the agent for revenge, but if it is known that Gunsalus has violated the law, action should be taken at once to put him out of busi- ness. On the other hand, if Gunsalus has been conducting his saloon in a law abiding manner and the city has no cause for complaint, it is his right as a citizen to be cleared of the FARAAIARIFRIFIIHA IR *{iii*ifll***#fiikii%fl(ii: * * * NORTHERN ¢{ROCERY COMPANY ‘WHOLESALE GRUCDRS * AR i{iifi(***{***k%fiki&**fi*fii * BEMIDJI MUSIC HOUSE chiarges which have been filed against him. 1 THIS IS MY 51st BIRTHDAY.
