Klein i Hello! record as favoring the paving of the Nymore road and the calling of a special election for July 23, at which time the matter can be laid directly beforé the people. This should be carried. The city engineer has estimated that the cost of paving the Nymore road will be $10,000. This estimate is based on a higher cost per yard than any of the bids recently sub- mitted for city paving, and will probably be cut down some on the contractors’ bids. Through the Commercial club and city council, the three railroads have been asked to furnish the gravel nec- essary for the paving and there is little doubt but that they will do so as two have given their word al- ready. As the gravel cost is one- third of the paving cost, this will bring the cost of the improvement to less than $7,000. Of this §7,000 net cost, the city pays half and the abutting property owners the other half so that the fin- al cost to the city of the paving will be between $3,000 and $4,000. Tt should be understood that the paving also includes two city clocks as it starts at the junction of Bemidji av- enue and Third street and runs south past the Northern Grocery company plant. On the other side of the river, the road will run to the city limits and will make a paved highway eigh- teen feet wide over what is now the With the improvement made, the city will have nineteen blocks of pavement iu the business section and a first class approach to the city from the east. As far as can be learned, the abut- ting property owners, the Crookston Lumber company and the Minnesota and International road being mainly interested, want the road and are willing to pay their share. For the amount of paving to be done, the city is getting out of it with twenty per cent less expense than usual. The city has the money and it is hard to find a valid argument against mak- ing the improvement. A trip by auto or horse and buggy through the town of Frohn will show convincing evidence why the road should be paved. The country to the east of Bemidji is more thickly set- tled than in any other direction These farmers must have a market for their produce. Conditions being equal, the majority prefer to deal in Bemidji where the market is larger. But when they have to cut size of their loads in half in order to get around the south shore of the lake, the Nymore market appeals to them. They will take a full load there be- fore they will a half load to Bemidii. As the city must stand the expense of the improvement and then be re- imbursed, it is necessary to pass a bond issue for $10,000. But of this amount, less than $4,000 will be ac- tually paid by the city. It will have twenty years in which to do it. Can Bemidji afford to neglect this matter longer? 1 election worst road in this territory. THIS DATE IN HISTORY.
