Invite Your Friends, Bemidji is to have a Fourth of July celebration Thursday that will make the eagle scream for joy. The com- mittee in charge has spent some mon- ey and expects to spend several hun- dred more in prizes that day. It will be an old fashioned Fourth, one with plenty of noise, athletic contests, water sports, and oratory. your friends in from the country for a day and help advertise the fact that Bemidji is a live town. Invite Ready to Kick Over. The Democratic mule gives signs of being ready to kick over the traces. After twenty-six ballots, the Balti- more delegates have not reached a nomination. Mr. Mule gives evidence of becoming tired of carrying such a load and thinks the time has come for definite action. Heat, humidity and hot air make an unbearable com- bination. Grass Seed, Earth and Water. Grass seed, earth and water, prop- erly mixed and cared for, will make a fine lawn or a beautiful park. Earth and water only will produce noth- ing but a few stray weeds. The city has been to considerable expense in laying out the litttle park at the foot of Third St. and it is a skeleton of a thing of beauty. A few packages of grass seed, with some clover mix- ed, properly planted in the park, and cared for will make it one of the beauty spots of the cit; Raining Dollars. It would be hard to estimate the value of the rain which fell in Be- midji and vicinity this morning. Not only will the crops greatly benefit, but the woods need the wetting down. It should put an end to brush fires for some time to come. The rain came at just the right time to save the crop as had it been much later, the crop migh have failed. A bumper crop in Beltrami county this fall will do more toward bringing in settlers next year than thousands of dollars spent in advertising the land. The prospective farmer wants to see results and thanks to the rain today, he probably will “ The Convergence of the Twain.” Thomas Hardy, the last great Vic- torian, in his old age and retire- ment, senses the stupendousness of the loss of the Titanic to illustrate what has been his lifelong concep- tion of human lives; as ships borne| on a steam of 'fime, suhject to chance and accident, perhaps doomed by a forecasting tragic Destiny. Accordinly Hardy has written a poem, which he styles “The Conver- gence of the Twain.” Just like Har- dy, title and verses, too! Character- istically he perceives in the incident| the ship and the iceberg, born so far apart, doomed from the first to meet. He sings: Well; while was fashioning This ship of swiftest wing, The Immanent Will that stirs and urges everything. Prepared a sinister mate For her—so gaily great— A Shape of Ice, for the time far and dissociate. And as the smart ship grew In stature, grace and hue, In shadowy silence grew the Iceberg, too. Alien they seemed to be: No mortal eye could see The intimate welding of their later history, Or sign that they were bent By paths coincident On being anon twin halves of one au- gust event; Till the Spinner of the Years Said “Now!” The wnich each hears g two hémispheres. / ~—Minneapolis Journal. THIS IS MY 56th BIRTHDAY. George W. Donaghey. George W. Donaghey, the present governor of Arkansas, was born in Union Parish, Louisiana, July 1, 1856. His education was received in the coramon schools and at the Uni- versity of Arkansas. After leaving the university he began his career as a cabinet maker and later embarked in business as a furniture dealer and hardware merchant. Then he took up the business of general contract- ing, in which he was eminently suc- cessful from the financial viewpoint. He built many large buildings in Ar- kansas, Texas, Oklahoma and other parts of the southwest and also con- structed several railroads in the same section of the country. In 1909 he was elected governor of Arkansas on the Democratic ticket and two years later was re-elected. In the spring o fthis year Governor Donaghey was defeated in a contest for renomina- tion by Congressinan Joseph T, Rob- inson.
