The next forward step in Kansas is the probable passage of a bill giv- ing to the families of convicts the wages actually earned by them in prison. It is said that it takes nine tailors to make a man, but, after all, there is nothing permanent in their work. It doesn’t take more than one dress- maker to unmake him with a little assistance from his wife. In the opinion of the Pioneer-Press, “there would be no danger of over- population of the world if some epi- demic should come along and carry oft all those folks who think they can write plays or run newspapers.” The attendance at last evening’s performance by the University Dra- matic club in the presentation of “The -Merchant of Venice” should have been doubled. Back to the Farm, While the movement from the country to the city, which has been going on for twenty years or more, has not been stopped and is still one of the main problems in this country, there are here and there some evi- dences which impress one with the belief that, at last, such movement is really being checked to some extent, and that a new and highly encourag- ing interest in agriculture and in rural life has been created during re- cent years. The future of the farm is now generally considered one of the most important subjects for dis- cussion in this country. There is not a state in which special and success- ful efforts are not being made to in- crease interest and improve conditions of those inclined toward rural pur- suits, says the Dallas News. Everywhere plantations and pas- tures are being reduced in area, and lands are being more carefully culti- vated. For example ,in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia since 1860 the area of improved farm lands had increased from 33.5 per cent to 49.4 per cent of 1834—-Charles H. The number of farms has increased mightily and the aver- age size of the farm has, of course, decreased in proportion. The average farm in 1880 was 321 acres, in 1910, 84 acres. In 1880 there were fewer than 44,000 farms under 10 acres in size, and in 1910 there were - 18,000 and farms from 10 to 20 acres now number more than 245,000, having increased from fewer than 100,000. .In 1880 there were 245,000 farms between 20 and 50 acres in extent, in 1910 there were 656,000. Farms from 50 to 100 acres nearly doubled in number in the last thirty years. The number of farm owners in this country has grown since 1880 from 672,000 to 961,000, and increase of 43 per cent.
