MAROLD J. DANE, Editor. Looking Backward. One reason why many men of small means and unknown ancestry succeed is that they do not spend their time looking backward. They are not forever boasting of what their ancestors have done but spend their time in doing things which ‘would make their descendants proud of their birth. These men are running the race of life in a way that is certain to make It is a poor runmer who is always looking backward and the successful one is he who steadily keeps his eyes on the goal. Lack of success comes from a wavering deter- mination and an indefinite goal. them winners. The Time to Boost. Bemidji is this week host to many men and women prominent in the public life of Minnesota. It will also be visited by many others going and coming from the June meeting of the Northern Minnesota Development as- sociation at International Falls on Thursday and‘Friday. This will be the best, week in the year to boost for Bemidji, the liveliest little city in Northern Minnesota. Get behind the University week activities, attend the lectures and entertainments and nev- er let an opportunity of saying a good word for Bemidji and Northern Min- nesota pass by. Make the visitors go away with the firm conviction that Bemidji is the finest of all the places visited. It is an unequaled opportun- ity for effective boosting. Do not let it pass by unheeded. The Bryan Attitude. William Jennings Bryan last week gave an address to the state legisla- ture assembled in extra session in which he clearly set forth the reason why he is known as the “Great Com- moner” and is the idol of millions of American people. He said in part: “Three defeats have not destroyed in me the sense of obligation to my fellow men. I am now paying it on the installment plan. It does not embarass me because most of you here voted against me. If I was fit for the presidency, I did not need it. Those who voted against me in those three campaigns did not deprive me of the immortal honor of such a place as I may earn by serving oth- ers. What difference does it make what the world does for me? It is of far greater importance what I do for the world and that it shall be done as well as I can do it.” Many men in public life have been loudly acclaimed in one or even two campaigns, but never has a man been defeated in three campaigns and re- pudiated in a fourth ard still main- tained a high place in the esteem of the people as has Mr. Br—yan. His position in public life is a tribute to the man. z No matter how much he has been railed against, he has always been given credit for being sincere in his thoughts and statements. In fact, many of the reforms that he first ad- vocated have been taken up and adopted by the Republicans until, as he says, “The Republicans have stol- en my thunder.” In view of the fact that many prominent Republicans are saying that if either Taft or Roosevelt are nominated that they will vote the Democratic ticket if it is headed by Bryan or Wilson, this side light on Bryan’s character is not only inter- esting but timely.
