Ben- jamin M. Butler. 1892—Chicago’'s railway opened. 1900-—Congo Free by Great Britain, 1905—Japanese first state annexed destroyed the Sea of Japan. Clean Up the Alleys. Some time ago Dr. Ward, city health officer, posted notices calling attention to the conditions of alleys and asking that they be cleaned up. As far as can be seen now, the alleys have not been touched. Warm weath- er is coming and these alleys will become breeding places for millions of flies and other insects unless the filth and dirt is removed. The present conditions are a seri- ous public health. A large number of diseases are caused menace to by the carrying of germs from refuse piles to dining room tables on the feet of flies. One of the best ways to keep down the fly population is to remove the breeding places. The state board of health and many prom- inent physicians will back a state- ment that a large number of babies become sick and some die each sum- mer through taking germs from food cn which flies have been walking. It is a serious matter to pile ref- use and waste in the alleys and then let it rot and the warning of the health officer should not be disre- garded. Mr. Merchant—Just a Word. Newspaper advertising should sell goods before the customer enters the store as much as the catalog of a mail order house sells goods to a customer who never sees what he is buying until it is received. The on- ly way to combat the mail order heuses is to fight fire with fire. Mer- chants whe do not advertise should. and all should make their copy readable and interesting as the cata- logs of the mail order houses. Large mail order houses in the great market centers are every day selling goods in the natural territory of the home merchants. the money thus taken from the com- munity, but the local dealers are de- prived of their profit, they do less business, employ fewer people and the entire community suffers a gen- eral restraint of trade. The only way in which the home|f merchants can combat successfully the inroads of the mail order houses is to let people know that better goods can be bought at home for the same or lower prices; that the local mer- chants can give them the individual 7 attention that the mail order hous- es cannot; and that the development of other cities by trading with their houses does not help this community. The best and cheapest medium for reaching these traders is the home paper. Use your home paper. Let its cir- culation reach into the homes in your natural trade territory and draw in customers. Take a definite space and fill it each time with matter so at- tractive that the readers cannot pass it by without stopping to read all you have to say. Fill your space with salesmanship. Talk to them as you would to a customer. Do not fill the space With mere general publicity. Be definite and particular. Used this ‘way, newspaper space is the best ad- vertising medium known. Head each ad with an eye magnet that will attract attention. Make it plain why buying from you is an ad> vantage. Tell of the goods you sell. Make your advertising sell your goods before the customer enters your store just as a mail order catalog sells to its unseen customers. Bemidji is past the small town stage, but the mail order houses are each year taking more money out of | the natural trade territory of you merchants. They must be fought with vigor and emphasis, equal parts.
