Seward, Lin- coln’s secretary of state, born in Flor- ida, N. Y. Died in Auburn, N. Y., Oct. 10, 1872, 1811—The British and Spanish allies won a great victory over the French in the battle of Albuera. 1856—Charles M. Hays, president of the Grand Trunk Railway, born in Rock Island, Ill. Lost in the Titan- ic disaster, April 15, 1912. 1860—Republican national con- vention at Chicago nominated Abra- ham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin. 1871—Vendome Column, erected in Paris by Napoleon I to commemo- rate his victories, pulled down the Communists. 1875—Charlotte Cushman, the famous actress, took her farewell of the stage at the Globe theater, Bos- ton. 1889—Six hundred houses de- stroyed in the great fire in Quebec. THIS IS MY 54th BIRTHDAY. - Robert S. Vessey. Robert S. Vessey, the present gov- ernor of South Dakota, was born near Oshkosh, Wis,, May 16, 1858. His education was received in the com- mon schools. As a young man he went to South Dakota and for sev- eral years he was engaged in sheep raising. In 1884 he entered into mercantile business in the town of Wessington Springs, S. D. He met with marked success and in the course of ten or fifteen years he had accumulated a conmsiderable fortune as a result of his successful invest- ments in real estate, mining proper- ties and industrial enterprises. Gov- ernor Vessey’s public career dates from 1905, in which year he was elected to the South Dakota senate on the Republican ticket. In 1909 he was elected to the governorship and two years later was elected to his present term. Congratulations to: Levi P. Morton, former vice-pres- ident of the United States, eighty- eight years old today. Earl Carrington, Joint Hereditary Lord Great Chamberlain of England, sixty-nine years old today. Ell Torrance of Minneapolis, for- mer commander-in-chief of the G. A. R., sixty-eight years old today. He is the father of Graham M. Torrance, of this city, county attorney of Bel- trami county. The Lake Shore. Even a few stones which mark the limits of the path improve the ap- pearance of the lake shore at the foot of Third street. When the plot is covered with lawn and spotted with flower beds, it will be a place of beauty and delight. On the other side of the dock, con- ditions have not been improved as yet although Captain MacLachlan has promised that he will remove his skids, old boats, waste, etc., within a few days. With the lake shore at the foot of Third street cleaned up and beautified, Bemidji people need not be ashamed to take visitors down to the lake. .Boom for Judge Hallam. Judge Oscar Hallam of St. Paul, is being boomed for the nomination for justice of the supreme court at the state convention in St. Paul July 2. Judge Hallam has been a district Judge for eight years, succeeding the late Judge Jaggard in Ramsey coun- ty when he went to the supreme court. The friends of Judge Jaggard have decided to present Judge Hal- lam’s name to the convention for nomination as the successor on the supreme bench of Judge Jaggard. At present, Judge Bunn, a Democrat, is sitting on the supreme bench. Judge Hallam is said to be one of the strongest district judges in the state and has been practically \mnnl'-. mously re-elected at each election. He is well known in the central and southern part of the state and his " friends ‘believe that on the supreme bench he would show the same capa- bility that he has in district court.
