———— 6 ‘ENDORSED AT HOME i Such Proof as This Should Convince | Any Bemidji Citizen. The public endorsement of a lo- czal citizen is the best proof that can be produced. None Dbetter, none stronger can be had. When a man comes forward and testifies to his fellow-citizens, addresses his friends| and neighbors, you may be sure he is thoroughly convinced or he would| Telling one’s experience! not do so. when it is for the public good is an act of kindness that should be appre- ciated. The following given by a resident of Bemidji adds one more to the many cases of Home Endorsement which are being pub- lished about Doan’s Kidney Pills. Read it. P. M. Dicaire, Prop. grocery store, 1101 Irvine Ave., Bemidji, Minn., says: “The statement I gave about Doan’s Kidney Pills some years ago holds good. The benefit they brought me has been permanent. I took this remedy for the pains in my back and other symptoms of kidney trouble and it proved its merits by making me well.” For sale by all dealers. Price 50 cents. Foster-Milburn Co., Buffalo, New Yory, sole agents for the United States. Remember the name—Doan’s— statement | and take no other. | HEROIC MEASURES FOR GRIF| Night on Porch, Plunge in Cold Lake and a Walk Worked the Cure. There was no doubt I had a bad case of it. My nose was swollen and stopped; my head was full of flannel, and felt as big as a barrel; my ears were regular fire gongs; my eyes were little leaky lakes set in fiery, swollen rings. My body ached all over, and I experienced a constant nausea. And yet I was scheduled to spend the week’s end at the home of a famous poet and his wife on Lake Hopatcong, N. J. It was crisp April weather—very crisp. And I knew there would be no heat in the house save that thrown by the burning logs in the big open study fireplace; for this was supposed to be only their summer home. I reasoned that if I remained at home alone the fight against my ene- my would be intolerable, since he was already inside the barracks. So I de- cided to inflict myself upon my friends. I went. After a lovely evening over Socra- tes, Shelly and the fourth dimension, I was even beyond -blowing my nose. To my hostess’ solicitous inquiries I replied: “No, nothing; only will you kindly let me sleep on the porch?” She looked at me meditatively for & moment—probably thinking out a suitable obitgqry—then produced from the depths of a window seat an assort- ment of comforters. After the family had retired, I un- dressed quickly and was soon warmly pestled under_the_covers on my_cot THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER in the open-air bedroom. T “slept warm—almost too warm. When the April morning sun looked boldly into my face, 1 arose, donned a bathing suit, threw the poet’s great coat about me, and raced down the hill to the lake. I shut my eyes tight and plunged {n. Yes—it was cold. But after I had come out, and had plunged back again, I began to get warm. When this happened, I raced back to the house, stirred up the backlog and rubbed myself into a glow before the sputtering fire. I dressed hastily, and before the family wag astir I started on a walk as fast as I could go through the woods. The exhilaration crept through my entire body, and by the time I had returned to the poet’s home I no longer whistled through my nose nor contemplated suicide, but felt altogether like a normal human being, and attacked my breakfast vigorously. The “grip” was broken.—Los An- geles Times. —_— German Courtesy. The German has not only been taught the outer courtesies, but he has a kindness of heart and instinct- ive consideration for others which make his formalities of real value. The man who appears to have a fund of “small change and valueless atten- tions is the same man who will go miles out of his way to do you a favor tomorrow.” Only a few weeks ago I was travel- fng in the same train with a young lieutenant, whose smooth and grace- tul manners had more than once aroused my suspicion. He was got up in his newest and finest uniform, he had on Bpotiess white kid gloves, he looked, in fact, the veriest dandy. The- train was very full, and pres- ently a peasant fellow came in with his basket of vegetables, and looked about helplessly, treading’ on every- body’s toes in the meantime. I look- ed on my military neighbor and wait- ed for the storm. The dandy rose, saluted gravely, offered the weary peasant his seat, and went and stood outside. This is only one example of the many I will not cite for fear of being unnecessurily tiresome. I only asgert that foreigners can enjoy German courtesy—it is genuine.— From “My German Year.” The Powdering Closet. ‘When capricious fashion ruled that ladies should wear only white hair— the color supplied by nature being of no importance—the operation of put- ting on the powder niade special ar- rangements necessary. These took the form of a special room or cabinet, and in every house of any pretention a small chamber was set aside for the exclusive use of pow- dering the hair. A curtain divided in the middle, a powdering stand to hold the bowl of powder, and possibly a stool, were all that the closet con- tained, and through this curtain the lady whose head was to be powdered protruded her head, the maid standing on the other side and “throwing” the powder at her head by means of a powder puff. To preserve the eyes and complexion & mask was held to the face. Unfortunately, no 1illustration of a “powdering closet” seems to have been preserved. Same Girl. “Dad, I want to marry Tottle Twinkletoes. I hope you won’t blame me for wanting to marry a chorus girl.” “Not at all, my bhoy. I wanted to marry her myself when I was about vour age, and your grandfather was also_engaged to her once.” FRIDAY, MAY 10, 1912.
