10 SUB-SOILING By Dr. W. E. Taylor. Director of Soil Culture Dept., Deere and Company. This feature of preparing the ground for crops is often misunder- stood by the farmer. A misapplica- tion of the process or the use of an implement that does not fulfill the requirements, is apt to do more harm than good. The subsoil plow is beneficial in just two ways; namely, first to assist in storing water in the deeper sub- soils, and second to break up a hard pan or compact soil which exist be- low the bottom of the furrow, ren- dering them mellow so that they can easily be penetrated by plant roots. If subsoil is brought to the sur- face, or any great quantity is mixed with the seed-bed, the fertility of that seed-bed is correspondingly les- |sened, for the reason that subsoil does not often contain a sufficient amount of humus to maintain soil bacteria; or if the plow crumbles the compact soil below the bottom of the furrow to such an extent that large air spaces are formed, the movement of capillary water is rotarded and the plant suffers for moisture. The Modern Subsoil Plow, in fact the only one that has been devised that fulfills all of the requirements and in no instance can do harm, is Cucumbers Radishes Green Onions New Beets New Carrots very Strictly Fresh Eggs. with a cup of Seal Sanborn’s Coffee. “The Sign Easter Eatables Celery. The small point forms a reservoir for wa- ter, and from it water naturally spreads outwards, and obeying the law of capillary attraction, it moves upwards followed by air. Air and water acting in that way mellow the soil thereby effectually destroying a hard pan or any extreme compact- ness of the ground that may exist. The soil below the bottom of the fur- row may be, and often is, impervious to water and air from above, but are a stranger there is little use for us to dwell upon our quality of groceries, which at this time we deem unnecessary. TEA AND COFFEE TALK What we wish to do at this time is to give you a little Tea and Coffee talk. Coffees with ‘‘catchy’’ names, which are put up in ‘handsome’” packages and ‘‘boomed”’ with presistence, appear every day. Their real character is often disappointing, and is frequently indi= cated in their ultimate disfavor. *‘Chase and Sanborn’s Coffees’ remain in favor year after after year, and have increased largely in sale simply because they are always true to type, are absolutely pure and always of finest selection. Roe & Markusen when these elements are placed in a lower stratum of soil the results are remarkable. The process is nicely shown by pouring water in a crack in a floor that lays upon an under floor. so placed, if the crack is covered, will come up through the boards by the process of capillary attraction and in a short time rot them. As a rule it is not necessary to run the plow more than six or eight inch- es deep and only in every other fur- row. Subspiling is of no benefit in loose, sandy or gravel soil. -This type of plow absolutely solves the problem of storing water in semi- arid regions. It solves the problem of breaking up a hard pan, making mellow compact subsoils. It solves the problem of permitting plant roots to grow deep. TOUCHED THEIR SOFT HEART In the Ciroumstances, Expressed Hope ' of Irish Youths Seemed Some- what Humorous. Supreme Court Justice Cohalan of New York, who 18 proud of his Irisk blood, also believes that for keen wit end humor no race in the world equals the Irish. The justice spent: the greater part of last summer on the “ould sod” and when he came home he had acquired a great fund of funny anecdotes illustrative of the often un- conscious humor of the natives he met. He tells a story of two husky. lads who were tenants ‘of the same land- owner and who were constantly em- broiled either with the man himself or one of his agents. At last things came to such a pass that the two decided to waylay their landlord. They chose a favorable spot along the road over which they knew the landlord must travel that afternoon and crouched in the ditch waiting. To beguile, the time each told the other a part of the punishment he had devised for the landlord. Said one, “Oi’ll tap him on the head wid me blackthorn and whin he falls Of'll step on his face an—" The other interrupted: ‘Of mane to cut off his ears, split his nose an’ if he makes a fuss Oi'll slit his weaz- and.” They kept up the bloodthirsty con- versation for some time and at last one noticed the day was almost done and that it was far past the time when the landlord might have been expect- ed to pass. Fe interrupted his san- guinary threats to call the attention of his companion to the flight of time and the non-appearance of the man they expected, exclaiming: “Och, the poor felley, Oi hope noth- in’s happened him!” STILL HAD A POINT TO MAKE Domestic Difficuities Being Settied; Woman Insisted Upon One Oth- er Understanding. A colored couple was taken before the Juvenile court and against the man was placed the charge of neg- lecting his children. Judge Taylor 8gave advice as to what should be done to straighten out the family trouble 80 the couple could continue to live together and support the children. “You are earning $8 a week, and have three children to support om that,” said the judge. “It is evident that you must cut your expenses down as low as possible. You are paying for a plano by, installments. -You will have to stop that, for people in your circumstances can’t afford to have a piano. “You must leave the house you are lving in and move to a smaller one with lower rent. You ought not ta pay over $5 or $6 a month for rent.” The mother objected to this, saying that she could not live in a respecta. ble neighborhood under such condd tions. The judge found that they belonged to different churches, and he advised that the wife join the husband's church. He added that it was proper that the husband hold the purse strings. After many other difficulties had been smoothed over the case was continued two weeks to give the mew methods a trial.
