One point brought out in the speeches at the Commercial club last night that seems worthy attention is that of all the cities visited by the ‘fire prevention men in the past year, but one has had a fire with a loss of over $25 subsequent to the meeting. Their fire departments loaf. Fire Prevention. Owing to the room, it was impossible that every- lack of available interested in fire prevention could hear the talks given by the visiting insurance men last night. Consequently the Pioneer feels that it is not wasting its space when it published the addresses of Messrs. King and Colburn. These two were the only ones written, but a synopsis of the others can be found in the regular news columns. Too much cannot be said upon this subject. After hearing the facts and figures presented last night, the enormous waste absolute loss impresses one in a way which it had not before. The real rub comes be- cause such a large percentage is one and consequent of life and property preventable: Several local conditions came in for a hard scoring by the speakers and local men were urged to see that |the city was cleaned up at once. They were assured that Bemidji would not be a second to St. Cloud, Red Wing, Fergus Falls, and other cities which have entertained the as- sociation. Bemidji has tried to clean ‘up this last week, but many did not know exactly what to do. They have been told and have given their word to take action at once. One of the speakers pointed out that - while Bemidji’s loss last year was bat ‘42 per cent of the premiums collected, the proportion was higher than the average of the other years. This would seem to indicate that the city is becoming more that fire is being used as the method to remove some of our old buildings. He also pointed out that, while thousands are spent to put out a careless or fire that has once started, little is spent to prevent the first spark. to be proud of its record but the in- spectors uncovered some conditions that must be remedied before the loss can be materially cut. The con- vention has been a eye opener for | serve the gratitude of every property holder. Bemidji will clean up! If the in- surance men return in a month, they will see for themselves.
