A man's| time must be worth something. received 37 the The county commisalonen saved the county $2,000 at their meeting Tuesday but that saving was really due more to the keenness of the coun-, 1y attorney than to the acumen of | the board members. The men here| to buy the bouds for diteh --, amount- ing to $270,000, were to receive §7,000 for their services according| to their original agreement. In the conrse of the meeting Tues- day, one of the buyers stated that; they would pay the attorney general’s office the $900 in question between him and the counly commissioners out of the buyers $7,000 in order to have the matter settled. This meant that the buyers considered their ser- vices worth §6.100 instead of $7,000] and when the fact was brought to the | attention of the commissioners, they immediately started to get the price| lowered. They succeeded in finally in having buyers accept $5,000. The | point to be seen, however, is that un- less the one man had made his slip, the county would have been paying 37.000 for a $5,000 job. Ohio has a 400-acre farm in con- nection with the state prison at Co- ' lumbus which has reduced the cost| of maintaining.the prison in the line of beans, corn, wheat, onfons and po- tatoes, at least 25 per cent. The first vear ten of the inmates were detalled | to work the farm; the second year | twenty-three were required and this year a new dormitory will be built and forty farmer convicts, with much liberty will be on the place. An ex- change says the men are put on hon-| or and must not leave the farm, and, so far, none have broken the rules.‘ They sleep in a house with open win-! dows with no iron bars and after the day’s work they are allowed to read or enjoy themselves in games or as they choose. Some of the men are becoming deeply interested in farm-| ing and are reading deeply on the subject of modern agriculture after their day’s work. There is said to be a4 noticeable improvement in the at- titude of the men toward their work and toward life in general. Work in the open and contact with life and nature appears to react favorably up- on their normal fiber. A very curious instance of boldness in swallows was recorded in 1886 from Ceylon.
