Stocks | L SPORTS OF THE MANY FANS AT GAMES I Attendance’ Records Shat| tered by National League. Parent Organization Drew 5,808,178 Persons to Witness Great Pennant' Struggle—Boston Makes Re- markable Showing. Attendance records were massacred, pnd sent into the discard by the Na-. tional league during the past season. The parent organization drew within; 5,808,178 fans and near-fans during the course of the pennant Contrast that with the 3, 681,176 spectators drawn to National league games in 1909, when the for- mer record was set, and one can get an idea of what enthusiasm was stir- red up by the pennant fight in the old circuit quring the last season. From June until September, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Pitts- burg were engaged in the thrilling fight for the National league champion- ship, which eventually put the Giants in a position to draw a sound thump- Ing from the Athletics in the world’s, championship series. ‘As a result of that close contest and the consequent enthusiasm, and like- wise the ease with which the Athletics won the American league champion- ship, the National far outclassed the American in number of spectators. The American league total attendance was 8,962,350, The National league drew 2,102,604 in excess of the number drawn in 1910. Most shocking in the list of Na- tional league figures are those show- ing the Boston attendance. In 1910 the Boston team drew 183,317. In 1911 Boston drew 701,420. The in- creased popularity of the Boston Na- tional league team had its effect on the Boston Americans and for the first time since the organization of the American league the Doves outdrew the Red Sox. Boston has always been recogmzed rs one of the finest baseball citles in the country, and also one of the best. American league cities. The falloff in attendance at the Red Sox games during the past season can be attribut- ed mainly to the disruption of what was once a near-championship or- ganization by Owner John I. Taylor. As a result of the sterling finish made by the Naps, and the introduction of Sunday baseball in Cleveland, that team drew 162,590 more spectators than 1909. In fact, every city in the American league boosted its attend- nnoe figures exrept Boston and Chi- cago. Chicago, New York, St. Louis and Boston of the National league all out- drew the Athletics, the best drawing card in the American. Every club in the national league drew more than 500,000. Athletics, New York and Chi- cago are the only American league teams which exceeded that mark. Fol- lowing are the American and National leagues attendance figures for both 1910 and 1911: American. 1911, National. Philadelphia .618,160 Chicago New York 2,610 New York .
