In medieval times, when life was very insecure, it was usual for people to sleep on a bed which was surround- ed by sides of boards with strong posts at the four corners. These sides contained sliding doors, wWhich could be fastened inside. YWhen men retired to rest they took a weapon with them. If attacked in the night they were aroused by the noise made by the crashing in of their wooden defense |} and were able to defend ‘themselves. When the law became strong enough to protect human life the sides of the bedstead were gradually dispensed with, but the four posts remained. The boxlike bedstead still survives in the rural parts of Scotland and is al- most necessary where the earthern floors and imperfect ceilings cause much damp. Emily Bronte in “Wuth- ering Heights” describes one of these bedsteads in the old mansions as form- ing a “little closet.” Mr. Lockwood, who had to sleep in it, says, “I slid back the panel sides, got in with my light, pulled them together again and felt secure.” Problem In Gain and Loss. A well known physician of Chicago was attending old Pat, a faithful jani- tor, but a querulous patient. “Qch, doctor, ye said Thursday would bring ye again, and here it 1s Friday.” - “Today’s Thursday, Pat.” “Friday, doctor.” “Mistaken, Pat.” “Sure, I'll ask my daughter. Mary ‘Ann, what day would it be?” “Doctor’s right, father. It's Thurs- day.” “QOch, now, Is it, then? I ask your pardon, doctor. But since it’s Thurs- day when I thought it was Friday was 1 gainin’ a day or losin’ six? Hould on, I know, doctor; 'tis accordin’ to whither this is last week or nixt’— ‘Housekeeper. “I do not believe there is any oth- er medicine so good for ,whooping cough as Chamberlain’s Cough Rem- edy,” writes Mrs. Francis Turpin, Junction.City, Ore.
