The basket social which was given last Sunday at the home of Hugo Hensel, four miles east of Bemidji, netted $74.90. A buggy was stolen from the rear of the Given Hardware store Sunday or late Saturday night. The buggy was kept in the yard near the barn where other wagons and buggies are kept continually. The hardware firm has as yet not notified the police of the theft, thinking that perhaps | someone had loaned or taken the rig with the intention of returning it. The buggy was a single outfit, and springs, no top, quordory seat and red running gear. It was an old ve- hicle. The new towers which have been erecte’d at several places in the north- {ern woods are proving of great value to the rangers, according to State Forester W. T. Cox and Assistant D. IP. Tierney, who has returned to St. jPaul from a trip in this district. “The towers which are erected at the highest points in the locality, en- able foresters to view the country for miles around,” said Mr. Cox. ‘In this way the danger from fire is greatly decreased, and one ranger can cover a much larger territory.” Mr. Cox and Mr. Tierney will leave shortly for an- other trip of inspection in Northern Minnesota. Mrs. Wm. Bar- ackman preached at the Winan school Tuesday night. He and his family visited at the home of R. Shaw, Tuesday and Wednesday.— Miss Nellie C. Shaw went to Bemidji Friday to visit friends, a few days.— Stanley Knott, of Bemidji, was the guest of Robert C. Shaw, Thursday and Friday. This office holds an order for trans- portation to the extent of $36, good over the route of the Chicago & Du- luth Transportation Company. Good on the new steamer Minnesota from Duluth to Chicago and return includ- ing berth and meals or good for two passengers not including berth and meals. The same is being held for sale for $20. Speak quick if you want this snap. ¥ Street Commissioner Carter began work today on Lake Boulevard, grad- ing the road in front of the John Gibbons residence and down to the lake shore toward the Kelsey boat yards. There has been need of con- siderable filling which when proper- 1y done will make one of the finest drives in Bemidji. Several trees have been cut in order to give the street the proper grade, grading having be- gun in front of the F. J. Lambert residence. You are urged to call or telephone A. E. Many are doing this and a large number have already enrolled for the beginning of the term, Monday, August 28. At the home of Chas. Williams near Maltby yesterday morning occurred the marriage of James Henry Morris of Becida to Miss Dolly Isabelle Wil- liams, Rev. H. F. Parshall of Cass Lake officiating. The ceremony was performed at 11 o’clock and imme- diately after a wedding dinner was served to about 25 of the intimate friends and relatives of the bride and groom. Boostrom of St. Paul, came down from Brainerd last night and will spend a couple of days in the city. Mrs. A. C. Guyer and daughter, Avis, returned yesterday from Glen- coe where they have spent the past two months as the guests of relatives. Mrs. E. W. Quick of Langdon, N. D., returned to her home today. Mrs. Quick has spent the past week in the city looking after property interests. Miss Erica Danielson of Crookston, has returned to her home after hav- ing spent the past two weeks in the city as the guest of Miss Lizzie Erick- son. 3 I~ B. W. Lakin returned this morn- ing from Minneapolis where he has spent the past few days in the inter- ests of the Crookston Lumber com- pany. Miss Jeannette McDonald of Big Falls, who has been the guest of Miss Paula Hensel of the township of Be- midji far the past week left today for Lincoln, Minn. Rev. P. W. Barber, District Super- intendent of the Congregational Church of St. Paul, spent yesterday in the city. He was entertained last evening at the home of Mrs. J. H.| Crouch. J. W. Underwood of Staples, senior vice commander of the Park Region Encampment Association, spent last evening in the city conferring with Commander Billiard.
