Any kind of business pays in Be- midji, but oh, you corner saloon! It might be well for persons who own bicycles to read up on court etiquette. ‘Where but in Bemidji would a messenger boy ever be accused of speeding? As a letter writer, at least, Mr. Viggo Peterson of Puposky seems to be a success. --Speaking about home runs, you ought to sée the small boy dig in when he learns that a watermelon has been sent up to his house. At Minneapolis on Monday the baseball game lasted only one hour and nine minutes. It usually takes almost that long just to kill the um- pire. Missouri contemplates constragt- ing a highway reaching across the state. Is Minnesota going to let Mis- souri show us when it comes to build- ing roads? If it is true that Dr. Dumas is to blame for the retention of Mr. Hazen as sheriff of Beltrami county, we are forced to admit that we believe the Cass Lake mayor should be punished. = It is said that heat has warped the Washington monument. It has done well to stand at all with all the hot air that is used in Wash- ington, and we hope Congressman Steenerson will take no offense. RIDING ON WALKS NOT SO BAD. Of course there is no argument over the necessity and advisability of teaching the criminally reckless persons who use the sidewalks as bi- cycle speedways that their danger- ous and disgusting practice can not continue. The person who will en- danger the lives of men, women and children by dashing along the walks should by all means be given a’‘sound lesson—one that he will remember. On the other hand, the Daily Pio- neer believes that it is going to be an easy thing to carry the crusade too far and that an injustice is apt to be dome a class of persons who, although they have ridden wheels on the walks, have been-cautious at all times. Obviously, a bicycle rider here must use the sidewalk. Qtherwise he might as well sell his machine. Un- That there must be a stop to the knocking down of sidewalk pedes- trians is certain, but in getting rid of this evil, can it not be done with- out ‘working an injustice to a high- ly deserving. class of citizens who lodk upon the bicycle as a necessity in carrying them to and from their work? The three hour a day sched- ule come a long ways from solving the problem. If the bicycle riders who favor a fair use of the sidewalks would get together and present their side of the case it might help some. SAVED! The infamous plot of Doe Dumas, the desperado, to oust Sheriff Hazen and put a bad man in his place has Because we have a governor who knows Twiddle dee from Twiddle dum and an attorney general who can see through the skimmer with one eye shut, Beltrami county has escaped the ignGminy of having a of slickers like ‘our governor and at- torney general on the lookout for the interests of the people. Who, but they, could have knowa that Dr. Dumas yearned for the prec- ious scalp of our dearly beloved and justly honored sheriff, and" who but they could'have known that once said scalp was yanked, the Beltrami board of county commissioners would re- place the vacancy with a man name by Dr. Dumas 8o that the jury which may try him in September would be a naughty little jury which would not let Dr. Dumas go to Stillwater. Verily, the decision to permit the trifling charges of plunder and gross negligence preferred by one Viggo Peterson, by politics a Socialist, to continue in a nap that bids fair to make the sleep of Rip Van Winkle look like the doze of a deacon in church, is important. Beltrami county has been saved and the scheme of the designing Dr. Dumas shot full of holes. ‘Don’t pay any attention to the fact that the Peterson charges were filed several days before Dumas was ar- rested, or that Beltrami may be suf- governor and attorney general didn’t, and besides if you did it might spoil the party. Rejoice and be happy that the in- iquitous hand of the wicked Cass Lake mayor has been stayed and that Mr. Hazen is to continue as our pop- ular sheriff, at least until after the Dumas trial. ' Interesting Public School. The Washington Irvine girls’ school in New York has 3,000 pupils and -seems to be one. of the most in- teresting in the country, as the girls are always planning something that i8 out of the ordinary in school work. Last week they initiated Mrs. John A. Dix into the Order of the Daisy, a society in which most of the promi- net women of New York have already been initiated. The girls are said to buy a bottle of Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. It is almost certain to be needed before the summer is over. This remedy has no superior.
