It is likely that under certain con- ditions the Hanson reapportionment meagure would have passed. In any event it never was put to a vote in the senate. There would. be: a fair chance of such a bill being enacted into law, wiping out as outrageous an injustice to the north as can be thrust upon a people—taxation without represen- tation. There could be no criticism if Gov- ernor Eberhart were to assemble the legislature for this sort of work, and in view of his Brainerd declaration that that was what he would do, he may expect sharp criticism when he comes up next year as a candidate for re-election. EARNING HIS SALARY. When a state forester will tramp through the woods for 80 miles in an effort to find out just what is needed in the way of protection, it begins to look as if he wanted to earn his salary. A forester could sit in the pretty little marble house on capitol hill in St, Paul if he wanted to, and possibly get away with the place for a long time, although the flames in the meantime might be getting away with the forests. It, of course; is too early in the game to say as to wheth- er Mr. Cox is going to make good, but his 80 mile -tramp will make many persons suspicious of him as a chair warmer. —_— IMPORTANT TO BEMIDII. There should be more than pass- ing interest shown in the launching here of a council of the United Com- mercial Travelers. It means more than that anoli‘er secret order has been added to the list. This organi- zation, famed for its sterling attri- butes, probably does more for the benefit of the public than any other one agency. Wielding the tremend- ous power that it does, the organiza- tion is enabled to request and secure better hotel facilities, prompt and efficient train service and right many other of the wrongs which by a co- operated movement can be righted. Nor is that all. It is a mighty good advertisement for a town the size of Remidji to have an organization of this kind choose it for its home town, for the members constantly on the go are sure to say nice things of the place. Then, too, it brings the members here on Sundays and holi- nomination for governor, the. contes- tants being Gov. Crothers, State Senator Blair Lee. President Taft has planned for the fall, a trip to Wisconsin, home of Senator La Follette, who is spoken of as a candidate for the presiden- tial nomination against Mr. Taft next year. the Smiths in the United States sen- ate—John Walter Smith of Mary- land, William Smith of Michigan, El- lison D. Smith of South Carolina and Hoke Smith of Georgia—have bEEl;l elected to succeed senators who have died. J. E. Swearinger, State superin- tendent of education for South Caro- lina, is mentioned as the possible successor of his uncle, Benjamif Ry- an Tillman, senate. Mr. Swearinger has been prominent in public-affairs in South Carolina for many years, notwith- standing the fact that he is totally blind. Arkansas politicians are awaiting with much interest, mot unmixed with impatience, the definite an- nouncement of Governor Donaghey as to whether he will'be a candidate for a third term as governor or make the race for' United States senator against Jeff Davis, whose successor is to be chosen .by the next legjsla- ture. Governor John Burke, who is com- pleting his third term as chief ex- ecutive of North Dakota, has given his friends to understand that when he quits the governorship he will re- tire to private life and resume the practice of law. Governor Burke is regarded as one of the most able and successful leaders the Democrat- ic party in the Northwest has pro- duced in-years and it was the hope of his political followers that he would become a candidate for the United States senate or house of rep- resentatives after the expiration of his term as governor.
