ONE FAMILY RESIDENCE BEST Originally the universal type of dwelling was the one family house, but as villages grew into towns and towns into cities the tenement or flat house gradually developed. Nowadays in most of the larger cities the apart- ment, flat or tenement, a huge building in which many families live in gmfly rooms, is the rule rather than the ex- ception. Only the very well to do can afford separate houses in the big cities. Many of the wealthy, In fact, prefer to reside in elegant apartments where modern conveniences are developed te the ultimate limit. But the poorer classes and many of those moderately well off are housed miserably in badly lighted, poorly ventilated flata. There has been noticed in recent years an increasing tendency for the flat house or tenement to invade the smaller cities and towus, particularly in places not far removed from the big cities. People who some years ago moved out to the suburbs to get fresh air, sunshine and space now find WHAT ATTKACTIVB SURROUNDINGS DO FOB A HOUSE their bouses close to unsightly tene- ment buildings, with all the discom- forts of city homes. Usually the first encroachment of the flat house begins with the two or three story building with a store beneath and flats above. While from the standpoint of the real estate owner there may be some- thing to say in favor of the flat house, from the standpoint of the family there is nothing to say except in op position. The one family house is in all respects superior. Persons who live in flats are not so much inclined toward buying homes of their own as are those who occupy separate houses. They become so fond of the little ip- terior conveniences supplied by flats that they are inclined to overlook the greater benefits to be derived from plenty of space, better ventilation and abundant sunlight which individual bouses afford In the smaller towns, where lots are cheap, the one family house should re- main the prevailing type of residence. You never can have a “home of your own” in a tenement occupied by balf a dozen or more families other than yours. If you live in a little cottage you will take pride in. keeping your A ONE FPAMILY HOUSE WHICH WOULD BE IMPROVED BY S0ME YARD ORNAMENTA- TIOR. lawn and kitchen garden in neat con- dition and in sprucing up the premises generally.” Your children will have room in which to play without going into the streets or annoying neighbors. Their play house, instead of being the interior of a stuffy room, will be na- ture’s great outdoors, and they will bhave a chance to grow up healthy and happy. In the opinion of the writer the tend- ency toward the building of tenements in the smaller towns should be dis- couraged in favor of the extension of the one family type of residence. Not only the individual familes, but the town itself, will benefit by the building of more homes that are homes and not merely places to sleep after you have bung up your hat and paid the rent.
