Washirgton, April 21.—Debate on the Canadian reciprocity bill was re- sumed shortly after the house con- vened, and an effort will be made to get a vote on the measure before ad- Jjournment. There is not the slightest doubt about the bill passing by a big ma- Jority, but the opponents of reciprocity are threatening to vesort to obstruc- tive tactics and will demand tedioys roll calls on all of the various amend- ments that are to be offered. The Democrats in charge of the bill are determined that no amendment threat- ening the integrity of the Canadian agreement shall be adopted. Chairman Underwood of the ways and means committee, who has been quite patient in granting time for gen- eral debate, served notice that if an attempt is made to prolong the dis- cussion unreasonably the Democrats may be compelled to bring their well oiled steam roller out of the round- house. He intimated that a fire al- ready had been started under the boiler. Friends Open Discussion. “For every dollar the government collects from its customs laws it is estimated that private interests collect seven dollars,” said Mr. Hobson of Alabama, favoring the agreement. Mr. | Hobson expressed the belief that a lowering of tariff duties would not in- jure American farmers or business in- terests. Representative Doremus of Michi- gan, a Democrat. also favored the adoption of the reciprocal agreement. | He said the business. interests of his city (Detroit) and he believed of oth- er parts of Michigan were convinced that prosperity to the country in gen- eral would follow the reciprocity pact. Danger to farmers and wheat rais-| ers was greatly overdrawn, said Mr. Doremus. The world demand for wheat acted as a halance to maintain | | the price of wheat. The use of a ': tavift for the sole purpose of keeping up an abnormal price of wheat amounts to a direct tax on bread, he| | said. “We are short on food in this| .country,” he added, “"and long on manufactured products.” 'MAY BECOME A DIPLOMAT |'Congressman Longworth Desires to Quit Political Life.
