This is the upshot of negotiations that have been going on between Rep- resentative Underwood and the house Democrats on one side and Senator Murray Crane and ' members of the senate Republican steering committee on the other. Mr. Crane and bis associates made the andvances with a proposition to limit the work of the extra session to reciprocity and the statehood of Ari- zona and New Mexico. The Republic- ans want a short session and oppose tinkering with the tariff. The Democrats would not listen to the proposition. Mr. Crane was in- formed the new leadership in the house would make no promises, but would go into extra session ready to tackle as wide a range of legislation as would come before the regular Ses- sion. Taft Would Let Tariff Alone. The president will send in a mes- sage constituting an appeal to pass the reciprocity treaty and provide for a permanent tariff commission, bllt to leave tariff revision until the regular session, by which time the tariff board will be ready to submit recommenda- ‘tions. The Dem‘brrmq pPropos nore the execntive und follow their ideas of giving the publlc what it wants., ¢ The indications are tha Democrnts ] will ‘be involved in squabbles' when | the session opens. ' PURSUE MEXICAN BANDITS United States Troops Ordered to Drive Raiders From Country. Marathon, Tex., March 24.—Across the Panther mountains, through 'the Collorando canyon and ,along the rocky declevities of the Rattlesnake range, sixty-five men of the Fourth cavalry are pushing their way in light marching order toward Chicos, where Mexican bandits and revolutionists have orossed the border, pillaged ranchers, killed a sheep herder and caused a panic among the Americans. It is a desperate ride those troopers are making through country where wa- | ter holes are miles apart, where food is scarce and where the roads are lit- tle more than mountain paths. The troop is under forced march- |/ ing orders, too, for Captain Edgar C. Steever, commander, has been told by General Duncan, commanding the de- partment of Texas, to relieve the Amerlcans ‘as soon as possible.
