The chief topic of discussion at Crookston is what the defense will be inthe StephensSaugstad sena- torial contest. A conference of the Saugstad forces from all parts of the county was held late yesterday in the law offices of Miller & Foot, butthose who attended were silentas to the developments of the meeting. At- torney Miller has intimated that no evidence would be taken before the justices selected by the Saugstad side of the- contest, but that there would be at least fifteen witnesses in rebuttal. However, it is contended by some close to the Saugstad throne that it has not yet been definitely decided whether any witnesses will be called. All efforts may be con- centrated on the storming of the senate, and it is known that a' large number of the county optionists are l|:tla|ming on being present when the contest goes to the senate committee.
