EIGHT ~RESCUED ALIVI look for the Safety of the Entombed { Men Is Dubious—Mishap to the Ma- | chinery Delays the Efforts of Res- cuers to Enter the Burning Colliery. Bolton, Eng., Dec. 22.—An explosion | followed by fire and causing many fa- | talities occurred in the Little Hulton colliery of the Hulton Colliery com- pdny here soon after 290 miners had gone below the surface to begin the day’s work. The cause and extent of the disas- jter was in doubt for several hours. The first rescuing party to reach the scene succeeded in bringing seven men and a boy to safety and later re- covered the bodies of five victims. The plight of the miners was.ren- dered more dangerous by a mishap to the machinery of the shafts, where the cages refused to move for a time, pre- venting a quick escape and interfer- ing with the ventilation. The rising gases were checked by obstructions and driven back upon the entombed men. Meantime the fire raged fiercely and it is supposed that many who were not killed by noxious fumes were burned to death. The work of rescue proceeded brave- ly amid discouraging conditions. The rescuers, wearing helmets for their own protection, went boldly into the Dpit and succeeded in extinguishing the flames in an area 150 feet in length, but encountered heavy falls of coal Fire Follows Explosion and the Out- | O’Leary-Bowser Bldg.
