Passing Trolley Car Is Wrecked and Four of Its Occupants Killed and All the Others Injured. New York, Dec.: 20.—Thirteen per sons lost their lives, fifty were in- jured and a thousand people severeiy shaken up in an explosion of car light: ing gas tanks and dynamite in the new six-story power station of the New York Central railroad under course of construction at Fiftieth and Lexington avenues. Nine bodies have been recovered and the, bodies of four workmen are believed to be in the wreckage. A trolley car filled with high school students was blown from the tracks on Lexington avenue. Four passen gers were killed and the others were injured. Fire Chief Croker says that in his opinion the first explosion was that of lighting gas and the second explosion that of a hundredweight of dynamite which lay within fifty feet of the gas tank. Ambulance surgeons from many hos-: pitals cared for the injured. The windows of all the buildings ovelooking the excavation were shat- tered, walls were in many cases cracked, a cloud of smoke hung over the scene and bodies were scattered here and there. The Grand Central cut, where new track levels are being excavated, looked as if a battle had been fought in it. Debris Blocks Street. The shock, which could be felt for many blocks, partly wrecked the fire engine house nearby and prevented the firemen from getting their appa- ratus into the street. . Monsignores Lapette and Hayes and Fathers O’Con- nor, McQuade, Sinnott and Byrnes of St. Patrick’s cathedral hurried to the scene and administered the last rites of the church to many of the injured At the postoffice sub-station at For- tieth street and Madison avenue the explosion slightly injured several clerks and scattered the mail over ‘the floor. In the New York Nursery and Child’s hospital ceilings were partly shaken down and the windows broken, but fortunately none of. the 300 chil- dren there was badly hurt. The power house, which is built of stone and brick and six stories high, caught fire after the explosion and the interior was practically burned out. Just what caused the double explosion probably may never be known. For- tunately for the thousands of com- muters on the New York Central lines, the force of the dynamite blasts was directed in an opposite direction from the railroad tracks. Otherwise the loaded train might have been wrecked. Officials of the railroad learned that there were many workmen in the building at the time of the explosion gnd that very few of them had been accounted for. b The damage to the power house and | other buildings has not been. estimat- ed, but it was stated that ic will likely exceed $500,000. GREAT CRUSH FOLLOWS FIRE, Entire Tunnel System Without Power ] for Several Hours. Jersey City. N. J.,, Dec. 20.—The worst crush in the history of down town commuting in New York fol- lowed the accident that put the en- tire Hudson and Manhattan railway system, operating the tunnel trains be- tween Hoboken, Jersey City and Man- hattan, out of business. The accident was a fire in thé Jer || sey City powerhouse of the company and the entire system was left with. out power for hours. The Pennsylvania railway has, as the result of the opening of its tun- nel and new station, abolished the | Twenty-third . street ferry to the city and reduced the number of boats on the other two-lines. The result was that the thousands of commuters on | that road and on the Jersey City trol- leys were herded like cattle on the few boats running and it was necessary to, )| call out police reserves to keep the .| crowds in check. The fire was put out after a couplé | of hours, but the machinery. was dam- aged so badly that several hours were b | needed to make repairs. hlr W e INSANITY TO BE DEFENSE Assailant of Mayor Gaynor to Be Tried ] Shortly.
