McEwen is flooding the -state with printed warnings -intended for . the benefit of country: girls going ‘to the cities. The notices read as foilows: “Do not go to'large cities for work unless‘compelled- to. If you must g0, write at least two weeks in ad- vance to the woman’s department of the bureau of labor, St. Paul, or - to the Y. W.-C. A. in the city where you want to work. “They will obtain for you such a position as youn ask; tell you about wages, boarding places, and. what- ever else you wish to know. “Two days before you leave home write again and tell the day and hour of your arrival, and on what train you will come. A respozsible woman will meet you and take you to your destination. “Do not ask questions of strangers or take advice from them. Ask uni- formed railway officials or a police- man. “This advice is issued by the state labor bureau -and posted through the courtesy of the officials of this road.” The state bureau’s work along this line can not be too highly com- mended. If every girl could be made to realize that the state is her willing guardian there would be fewer parents with aching hearts wondering “what could have become of Mol'ie,” while Mollie. tn her sober moments, is wondering why she could have been so confiding to a total stranger. I WHAT OTHER PAPERS SAY I Indiana will be compelled to get along witbout its Beveridge—and so will northern Minnesota. — Red Lake Gazette. May Her Hopes Come True. Itis safsto assert that Thurs- day was a day of real Thanksgiving NOW-IS THE TIME. For months the nesds and - desires and benefits of northern Minnesota have been discussed - until nearly every citizen knows . pretty well what to demand ‘of the incoming legislature in the way of “first aid to the injured.” The vital point justnow is thatall the pressure which the 700,000 residents of the thirty-one affected counties are capable of producing, is brought to bear atthe Brainerd meeting this week so that the entire commonwealth will realize the tremendous importance of this part of the state, awakening the legisla- tors to the fact that just demands from so great a power can no longer be ignored orrocked to sleep with a sweet song of promises. If you think Bemidji and Bel- trami county 1s dow sufficiently re- preseated in the legislature and are satisfied with the protection given our forests and have no protest to make regarding our roads then you might as well save your money and remain at home instead of going to Brainerd. But, if you want these thiags, and want to aid in cutting'the bonds which tie down that prosperity which only awaits its freedom to send the great north country ahead with a jump, make ita personal point to attend the meeting in our sister city on Thursday and Friday. Listen to the cry: every rooster is booster; keep Brainerd in your eye. Chicago has declared “Salome” indecent. This probably will insure its presentation in Minneapolis. After Wedne:day 'of this week it will be reasonably safe to go after the cows. The big game season closes on that day. Those who can shop early but won’t shop early deserve to find only holes in their stockings Christmas morning. Lake, whose little children may have j warmer shoes and mittens as the re- sult of closed saloon doors.—Cass Lake Times. Thinks Tolstoi Did Mankind No Good ‘The Minneapolis Bellman admits Count Tolstoi was a remarkable character but fails to enthuse over his accomplishments. Says the Bellman: The question of the real value of his contribution to the literature of his time may be left to those who have read his works more thoroughly and are better qualified to judge of their literary merit. On this point The Bellman feels disqualified to pass an opinion; he may venture to say, however, that 1t is difficult, even impossible, for him to understand how any permanent good to man- kind, how any helpful, or useful, uplifting or ennobling influence can come to the world through the read- ing of books so morbid, unnatural and distorted, so warped and dismal asthose written by Count Tolstoi.— Minneapolis Beliman. December is a great month, Among its list of set crimes might be mentioned the convening of congress, late Christmas shopping and its appetite for fuel. Indian weather prophets are say- ing that the present winter will be marked by heavy snow storms and that floods will result next spring. To some it dosen’t seem as if this part of the country ever could be too wet again. The Brazilian revolutionists who threatened to blow that country into seven million particles because they were refused six lumps of sugar for every cup of coffee have won their demands, returned the stolen battle- ship and for twenty minuces the na- tion was almost at peace. To correct any possible erroneous impression we woula say that the elephant killed by poison a few days ago was not the G. O. P. elephant. It is true that animal has been a bit shaky on his pins since the early part of this month but hopes of his recovery are still entertained. Would-be Lover Given Shock. Recently a most fastidious young man in a certain town bought a pair of overalls and found in them the name of the sewing girl who had made them. He promptly wrote ber a letter with all the effusiveness necessary in such a case and indue time received a reply which, how- ever, was void of the romance usual in such cases. Here itis:=—"[ am a working girl, it is true, but I make a good living and I do not care to sup- port a husband, as I would probably have to do, if I married some silly noodle, who gets mashed on a girl he never saw. Permit me further to say, that I do not kmow how my card got in the pair of overalls, and that when I do marry if ever, it will be some fellow who can afford MERCHANTS AS LAWMAKERS. In checking up the result of the recent election in Minnesota, the Commercial Bulletin finds that at the coming session of the legislature there will be nine merchants in the senate and fourteen in the house.
