Ji THE BEMIDUI DAILY PIONEER PUBLIRAED EVERYAFTERNOOR Exterr selbil B THE BEMIDJI PIONEER PUBLISHING CO. the Postotfice st-Bemid}l; Mianesole- e second class malied. SUBSGRIPTION---$5.00 PER YFAR /% 1DVANGE Oh, you buttermilk! It is still legal to ship lemon.ex- tract. It begins to look like ‘a great season for ‘suitcases. And men may now drink water who ‘nevér‘drank water before. Bemidji’s thirty saloons' begin to look like the same number of cents. That Cass Lake “fire' department certainly has;a chance tO distinguish itself. Mayor Haynes won out in Minne- apolis by twenty-four votes but a re- count may make it twenty-three for him. The meeting for forest fire preven- tion was ready to admit the fire water detention problem was un- solvable. Perhaps - some of those good women who have been trying to keep the children in school ' will not think it such a calamity after all. Not as a matter of news but rather as a matter of fact we take. time to say that in the meantime night and day shifts are still trying to count Judge Stanton’s votes. Philadelphia is so determined ot to have bad eggs that one man who sold them was sent to jail. Beltrami county isn’t so particular. She seems to have elected a couple to county offices. Names furnished free of charge. BEMIDJI SCORES AGAIN. Itis a significant fact that Be- midji should be selected as the spot where men should meet to incubate plans which shall make impossible a repetition of the recent Baudette and Spooner dis- aster. Solemn makers of the law have for years gathered in the capitol balls at St. Paul and passed such laws as their wisdom they thought was best for Minnesota. Never have they seen fit to save tbe lives and property of the best section of the state. It remained for a group of earn- est men and men who know all the ramifications of the problem to journey to Bemidji and here to coursel together and frame a bill which probably will be of more real and lasting benefit than any act that has gone on the statute books in the last quarter of a century. And in this connection the oft repeated story of the devotion of a Bemidji man to northern Minune. esota must be retold. It was William R. Mackenzie; Mackenzie of the county fair_ association; Mackenzie of the state fair booth; Mackenzie of the Northern Minne- sota Development. association, who brought the meeting here. The bill itself stands asa tribute to the best men and best friends of Northern Minnesota, and with possibly slight alterations by the Brainerd convention will go before the legislature at its- coming'session, FORCING THE SALOONS TOQUIT. The impending blow bas fallen and there does not.appear to be any avenue of escape left for the saloons which have béen doing businéss in the “restricted district.” A saloon that can’t purchase’liquor is in- just about the same predicament as a fish dropped from ‘the :clouds on‘a desert. It hasn’t needed: a' very careful néw condition of affairs must be t by all classes with but one I[deaZin mind: toobey the law. It is not a question of whether the govzrnmein_l’u action is just or whether a majority or the inhabitants favor the action. illegal to traffic in the salevof liquor. Lawlessness must not “be tolerated. If the government has found evils growing out of licensed places it is sane to presume that many fold evils would characterize “blind pigs” and “bootlegging.” Unfortunately Bel. trami county bas not the most- desir. able shenff in the world to' enforce law' and ‘order but Bemidji - has'a splendid chief of police<and: sturdy patrolmen who obey orders‘and there can' be no doubt but: that: Mayor Parker will demand- that Bemidji‘be kept:from lawbreakers. Much‘also will be expected from the govern: ment:along this-line: The loss toithecity of the revenue from saloon licensesis a subject which is' being ‘discussed: wherever two or more persons gather and that- goes to show that there is no- unani- mity of opinion as to ‘the net loss to the city. One thing is certain' the loss of saloons: is not going to stop Bemidjiin her fight to become the and it will be interesting’ to know just how the $15,000 which has:leen paid by consumers to the saloon- keepers so that they could’ purchase licenses, will be spent. Many school children suffer from constipation, which is often ‘the cause of seeming stupidity at lessons. Chamberlain’s Stomach and: Liver Tablets are an ideal medicine ‘to give a child, for they are mild-and gentle in their effect, and will cure even chronic constipation. Sold by Barker’s Drug Co. Fashions In Borneo. According to the rules of Borneoan fashion it is Geemed necessary to mold one’s limbs into. a more shapely form than that bestowed by nature. This Is done really effectively by winding strong brass wire round the ankles, the wrists, under the knees and above the elbows of children. Growth at these points is, in consequence, greatly bam- pered, with the result that the limbs come to be deformed or, according to Dyak ideas. brought Into proper shape. The headdress cousists of a curious headwork cap. and around his neck a bridegroom to be wears bangles of plaited fiber and strings of cowrie shells. These shells. by the way. as in other parts of the world. are used as currency. A yard of fiber or twenty to thirty cowrie shells represent the value of a penny. The white armlets are made of another species of shells. —Wide World Magazive. What a Toad Enjoys. There are few things more amusing than to watch a toad submitting'to the operations of a back scratching. He will at first look somewhat suspicious- Iy at the twig which you are advanc- ing toward him. but after two or three passes down his baclk:bis manner.un: dergoes a marked clange. his eyes close with an expression of infinite rapture, he plants his feet wider apart. and his body swells out to nearly dou- ble its ordinary size, as if to obtain by these means more room for enjoy- ment. Thus be will remain until you make some sudden movement which startles him or until he has had’ as much petting as he wants, when; with a puff of regretful delight, he will re- duce himself to his usual dimensions and hop away. bent once more on the pleasures of the chase. When a cold becomes settled in the system, it will take several days’ treatment to cure it, and the best remedy to use is Chamber- lain’s Cough Remedy. It will cure quicker than any other, and also leaves the system in a natural aud healthy condition., Sold ‘by Barker’s Drug Co. Through the Cracks. ‘When the celebrated divine Edward Irving was on a preaching tour in Scotland two Dumfries men of decid- ed opinions- went to hear- him. - When they left the hall one'said to the other: “Well, Willie, what do you think?’ “Oh,” said the other contemptuously, “the man’s cracked!” The first speaker laid' a quiet:hand on his shoulder. “WIiIL” said he, “you’ll often see & light’ peeping through a crack:” Croup is most prevalent during the dry cold weather of the early winter months. Parents of young children should be prepared for it. ~ All that student to discover’ that ‘a’ certainis' needed is a bottle of Chamberlain’s namber of officials of the Indian bureau of the department of the Interior was determined:to “put” the liquor houses out of commission, one way or another. - The method: adopted is” quite’ as effective ' as|’ though agents had'put-a' padlock on every saloon: Of course the liquor dealers: have had numerous warnings of what: to|' expect and ‘when a -man * paid’ over | his money for a liquor- license: ke must have known' that it was: @ gamble as to whether he wouldever' get it back. Yeét a majori- ty of one in parliament, which may logically depend om a majority of one in the country, has worked some of the most momentous results possible. The classical example is the act of union of 1799, certainly among the largest, most important and most remarkable changes ever accomplished by a legis- lative body. One ‘hundred and " six voted for it and 105 against.
