THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER PUBLISHED EYERY AFTEANOON EXCEPT SUNDAY BY THE BEMIDJI PIONEER PUBLISHING CO. E. H. DENU. Q. E. CARSON. Entered u the Posloffice at Berld)l, Minnesots, as second SUBSCRIPTION---$5.00 PER YFAR IN 4DVANGE IBERTSON FOR CORONER. Aside from the fact that one good term deserves another, there are business reasons why M. E. Ibert- son the Republican candidate, should succeed himself as coroner of Beltrami county. His re-election insures a continua- tion of the policy of economy which be inangurated at the beginning of his term two years ago, and which has resulted in a material saving to the taxpayers. One of the first things Mr. Ibert- son did after he assumed the duties of his office was to appoint F. E. Johnson deputy coroner at Baudette to look after the northern end of the county. This means that in every case demanding the attention of the coroner a saving of $33- has been made and the total number of such cases to date represent a clear saving to the county of $495. This one innovation ought to entitle Mr. Ibertson to strong en- dorsement at the polls on next Tues- day, but there are numerous other argumeants to be used in his defense. He has at all times performed his)| duties with faithful fidelity to the sacred trust imposed upon him when the voters named him coroner; he bhas been competent and obliging; corteous and considerate. He has been a citizen of Beltrami county for nine years and his fa- miliarty with its topography is an important adjunct to his many other qualifications. He conducts his department of the public work with the same care to detail and to the avoidance of all unnecessary expense as he would his private business. Take no chances—vote for M. E. Ibertson for coroner. NOT A DYING RACE. “It doesn’t look as is they are a dying race when in one year there isan increase oZ 101 children on our annuity rolls, and that’s just what happened last year,” said Major John Howard while in Bemidji pay- ing out government to Indians. The major said more and the longer he talked the better the con- ditions of the Chippewas appeared and the more convincing became the assertion that they are ‘‘making good” in the role of civilized citizens. It may be true that some of the Indians who graduate again heed the “call of the wild” but the percentage of successful Indian students is gratify'ng to those carrying on the work of their education. “Why, of my force of nine men here,” said the major as he beamed upon the paying-out squad,” all but three are Indians,” and they per- formed their difficult and intricate clerical work with the dispatch of real experts. “Its a chance for personal observa- tion, “continued Mr. Howard. “In my office at White Earth I have an Indian girl for a stenographer who receives a salary of $900 a year, and she earns it.” One of the most encouraging signs of Indian education is the desire manifested by parents to get their children into school. Not long ago force had to be used. Now there are, voluntarily, more scholars than can be cared for and plans for taking care of the increased attendance are being made. The only Indian school in the state, located at Pipestone, is filled to overflowing and students are be- ing sent to Carlisle and the other schools throughout.the couatry. — SHOULD BE STOPPED. Women residents of Bemidji are being made the victims of the endless prayer fright. Paganism in its blackest depts has to go some to beat the ‘‘endless prayer.” It is a superstition: annoying any person unfortunate enough to pay serious heed to the unnamed epistle. The Pioneer has a copy of this outrageous document, It is written with a lead pencil under the heading, ‘“An Ancient prayer” and reads as follows: ““Oh Lord Jesus we implore thee to bless all:mankind. Keep us by, thy precious blood. Take us to dwell with thee. “This prayer was written me bya friend. Copy itand see what will happen. T’is:said: She who will] write this prayer nine times begin-'" ning the day she gets it, will experi- ance great joy. She who will not copy somé great misfortune is sent in Jesus alone. That she who writes this will be delivered from all ailments, ‘ DO NOT BREAK THIS CHAIN. Make a wish while writing and do not fail to write it to nine persons, one each dav. Do not sign your name.” There has been an effort on the part of the postal authorities to stop the sending of these things through the mail, but without much success. The communication is of such a na- ture that its cowardly play upon the sensibilities of a woman are so pal- pable that the writter is either ashamed or afraid to sign his name. There is no element of real religion in connection with the purposely de- ceptive and threatening epistle. Tf we know anything of Christianity it stands for everything these letters do not. Threats of dire vengenance if one does not scribble a jumbled “Ancient Prayer” is too silly a pro- position for a woman in her proper frame of mind to consider, and the deplorable part of it is that the as- sertion thata curse will follow if the letter is thrown into the stove,— as it should be—leaves many women, fol- lowing the shock of receiving such a communication, in a nervous state. | wHAT OTHER PAPERS say Champion Fly Killed.
