HELD FOR FARE SWINDLE| Men Charged With Lumber Company Fraud Locked Up Here. On charges of having] attempted to swindle the Northland Pine Co., a Weyerhauser property, by fraudul- ently accepting railroad fares, Wil- liam Schultz, Joe Schallock and Peter Borke were brought to Be- midji last night and landed in the county jail. The men were arrested and brought here by Deputy Sheriff Harry McCabe of Cass Lake, who caught the men at the Crookston Lumber Company’s Camp No. 5 at Whitefish Junction, southeast of Nebish on the Red Lake railroad. The three men are charged with having agreed to ship out of Min- neapolis for an employment agency representing the pine company, to do logging east of Leech Lake, They came to Walker with the under- standing that their railroad fare would be paid if they worked until spring. They proceeded to the camp and worked one day when, it is charged, they came to Bemidji and were re- .employed by Anderson & Johnson who sent them to the Crookston camp. James Long, general superinten- dent of Northern Pine Company, learned of the desertion of the men and immediately instituted proceed- ings against them under a breach of contract charge which is provided for in a law passed by the legisla- ture a few years ago and which pro- wides a severe penalty for such an act. The men were taken from Bemidji to Walker, this afternoon, and they will be arraigned before Justice Wright in that town. U. S LAYSGLAIM T0 ‘SITEQF ST. FRANGIS Word was received here late ‘this afternoen from International Falls that representatives of the United States had laid claim to- day to 100 acres of land just across the line in Canada, includ- ing the city of St Francis, also several islands 1n the Rainy River. Upon what gounds this govern- ment makes its claim is not known but it is presumed to be a boundary line dispute, and complications may result if Canada refuses to give up the territory.
