Work on paving Third street, again interrupted by the lack of gravel, has been resumed and it is expected that it will be completed to the lake front within the next two weeks. Bemidji may soon have a Sons of Veterans Camp. The formation of such an organization is being discuss- ed and if present plans carry the camp will be started by State Commander Villars. - Mr. Villars will visit Crookston to deliver a public address on Sept. 26 and it is hoped that he may be induced to come to Bemidji at that time. The nomination of Ole Erickson for the state senator from the forty- eighth district according to returns compiled at Brainerd, is assured over Senator S. F. Alderman. The Re- publican nominees for representa- tives are Charles W. Bouck and L. D. Brown, both for Clapp and anti- option. A small Democratic and Socalist vote was cast in Crow Wing county. There is a probability that the county commissioners of Itasca county will co-operate with the citi- zens of Blackduck in the building of a fine wagon road from Rosy, twenty- two miles from Blackduck, so that the farmers living in the Rosy country can go to Blackduck to do their trading. Reynolds, Phone 23 ~ At a meeting of all pupils of the Bemidji High School held yesterday, the following staff for the new school paper was elected: editor, Lilllan Cochran; assistant editor, Gertrude Malone; business manager, George Morrison. The paper is to be8: inches bo 11 inches in size and will contain editorials, special literary contributions, locals, high school notes and news of a general interest. The first issue will appear sometime between Oct. 1 and 10. Chris Olson, proprieter of the Ar- cade saloon, Fourth street and Min- nesota avenue, was arrested on a charge of having viclated the state business open after 11 p, m. and paid a fine. Harrington says every effort is being made by his force to see that the saloons are closed after 11 p. m. and on Sundays and that offenders in every instance will be arrested, That there is gold-bearing quartz within a few miles of Bemidji is in- dicated by a find made by Chester Snow of this city, who displays several fine specimens of rock. Mr. Snow sent samples to an assayist in Chicago to be tested, and if he finds that there is a paying amount of gold or other mineral in the samples, he will prospect the property where the samples were found. The rain which began at midnight last night and continued until noon was one of the best “soakers” of the season. Farmers say that it will put the land in good condition. The rain was general over the north- west. Four “overcoats stolen from a clothesline back of the Nicollet hotel Monday were recovered by the police. Two of the coats were buffalo, an- other was fur lined and the fourth a new high priced cloth coat. The stolen coats were found hidden in the alley not far from the hotel. Bemidji Daughters of Rebekah Star of the West No. 183, last’ night celebrated the fifty-ninth anniversary of the founding of that order. A banquet, dancing and other pleas- ant social features marked the gath- ering which was held in the Odd Fellows hall.
