The importance of choosing county commissioners should not be underestimated by the voters when they go to the polls next Tuesday to select their candidates. The commissioners are the guard- ians of the people’s money and the conservation of their taxes is largely in the hands of members of this board. Too much care in the per- sonnel of this body can not be ex- ercised. For these reasons the Pionner wishes to impress upon its readers the name of W. G. Schroeder, a Be- midji business man, who is a repab- lican candidate for the. nominatio n of commissioner from the first dis- trict. His training in the commercial world has been, during his present term of office, dedicated to the best interests of the county and there should be no doubt as to the desirability of retaining him as a member of the board. To retire him would be a grevious mistake. I Mr. Gray will be still greyer be- fore he gets it, l NOW is the time forall good men to come to the aid of their party. John Dietz is still having his mail addressed to Cameron Dam. Among the crooks renominated tor office in Illinois may be men- tioned the Lorimer democrats, Those Walker robbers not only have the stamp of crime upon their brows but $8oo worth of them in their pockets, James J. Hill was 72 years old yesterday, During these 72 years Jim has made more money than some men could make in a million years. The cost of living continues to increase. Prices quoted by Judga Bailey show caribou, moose and deer meat holding steady at $55.20 a quarter. Uncle Joe Cannon carried every county in his district for re-nomi- nation, This is not exactly meant as a knock on the district—merely a matter of news, The grand jury ' recommends that the Beltrami county jail be provided with suitable quarters for crazy folks. Might be well to get it in shape before next Tuesdey. Iver A. Krohn, candidate for re presentative, is one of the sons of Norway who has made good in this country. He was born near Aale- sund Norway, Feb. 2, 1857. He landed in America in 1879, and later took a homestead near Fertile where be resided until he moved to Shevl- in in 1897, since which time he has been in the general mercantile busi- ness. During his residence at Shevlin he has been president of the school board and for the past six years has been a member of the Board of County Commissioners, and at the present time is ¢hairman of the board. See that you place an X after his name when you go into the election booth next Tues- day. Is R. C. Hayner the proper man for Auditor? This is a question that every voter should ask himself As a County Auditor Mr. Hayner is an innovation in Beltrami County. As a man conducting a political campaign. he is a failure, in that he refuses to go out over the County and solicit votes for himself. When asked if he were not going out to see the people over the county Mr. Hayner said “Iam draw- ing a salary to attend to the busi- ness in the Auditor’s office and not to work for myself. If I hired a man to do certain work, and he should neglect this work for his own interests, I would get another . manin his place, my first duty is 1o the county and until my successor is elected and qualified ycu will find me at my desk in the Aulitor’s office.” = From a political standpoint this may be poor politics, but the ques- tion is, what kind of a man is the hest to be placed in an office of this kind, a [zond politician or a man who will jeopradise his own interests in order that he may attend to the duties of his office? THE DEMOCRATIC CBNDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR. Into each life some raifr must fall; some days must be dark and dreary. Muffled drums and toll- ing bells, funeral dirges and half masted flags are not happy things to consider; sackcloth and solemn requiem brings thoughts of sorrow rather than gladness. It is in these moments of gloom that condolences are due and so we offer them now fully and freely to our friends the democrats, who indeed have good reason to wreath their hopes in blackest crepe. Deep as would have been the grief in any event, it becomes stil) keener when so splendid a citizen as Mr, James Gray is lead to the slaughter. POLITICAL ANNOUNGEMENTS Announcement.
