Whatever the weather man may say about it, it is “fair” today and continued “fair” tomorrow. I We refuse to print: what J. Gurney Cannon of Danville, Illinois, said when he heard the news from Maine. Thirteen persons ‘were made citi- zens of Beltrami county by the dis- trict court. That is apt to be an unlucky number for some of the men who are seeking-a political office. WHY THE PIONEER IS EARLY . The Daily Pioneer publishes at noon today to give its employes an opportunity to visit the Beltrami county fair. This paper feels that the exposition now being held in Bemidji is so good and big and interesting that there is only one expression that just fits the'case and that is our old: well worn friend “it must be seen to be appreciated.” A year’s. subscription, beginning February 30 next, to the man, woman or child who can walk through the exhibits without saying, “‘Well, isn’t that fine—I didn’t suppose we could raise anything like-that.” THE COUNTY FAIR. Enriched by a population of 2,000, 000 persons, the city of Chicago justly glories in the wealth that has made possible her sky punctured business streets, her huming factories, crowded docks.commercfal triumphs. She points with pride to Washing- ton park’s spacious acres of budding plants, forestry gardens and emerald water; she leads the weary stranger to rest beneath the well trimmed trees of flower decked Lincoln park. She grabs you by the hand and. whirls you off to see a hundred kinds of amusements. She seems to have everything that mortal man could wish for, and still she isn’t happy, and yearns for what Bemidji is today enjoving— the sight of a county fair. Here is the bold admission plucked from the Chicago Record Herald: «Theseason- of the county fair is close upon us. There has lately been a revival of this old-time in- stitution near the larger- cities New Yorkers go a-fairing out to Long Island or up into West- chester County, and the properous denizens of our own north shore throng out in numbers to Liberty- ville. “But the genuine, uncontaminated county fair is hard to find. The best of them are complicated with horse shows and dog shows; the worst of them are vulgarized by ‘pikes’ and ‘midways,’ by fakers and barkers. A stand should be made for the real old-fashioned fair in all its pristine and rustic- simplicity. The 'floral hall’ and the ‘agricultural hall’ should not be made to under-|- go an evolution that practically robs them of their identity. The log: cabin quilt, the canned peaches, the mortuary ‘hair work’ and the gigantic pumpkin are all too precious and too time-honored to be lost. ‘““A large proportion of city people were once country dwellers. Many of them can hark back without diffi- culty to the early joys of some rustic September festival and would be glad to catch briefly ata revival of its familiar features and associations. True, the world: do move; yet it might pay the managers of some of the nearer autumnal gatherings. to acknowledge:that-a. county: fair is not a nickelodeon, not an ‘amuse: ment park,’ not a flushed and sophisticated stretch function: with lines. well worth. observing and tradi- tions well worth maintaining—an occasion. capable of calling out some- thing of ‘natural piety’ from the man who has kept his heart in the right place.” Chamberlain’s Colic, and Diar- rhoea Remedy is today the best known medicine in use for the re- Jief and cure of bowe complaints, Tt cures griping; diarshoes, dysentery, #nd shoild be taken taken at the first unnatutal Jooseness of the bowsls, 1t is equally valuable for childien snd adults, 1t slways cures, Sold #¢ Barker's Drug Stors, POLITIGAL ANNOUNGEMENTS Announcement.
