THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER PUBLISHED EVERY AFTERNOON EXEEPY SVRDAY 81 THE BEMIDJI PIONEER PUBLISHING CO. E. H. DENV. Q. E. CARSON. —_— e e Entored u the Poutotfics at Bowid]l, Mimessta, s sessad class matter, SUBSCRIPTION---$5.00 PER YFAR 14 sDVANGE Little crimpy, but just think of the frost Mr. Ballinger got: Senator Lorimer will pay.for his own meals- when: he goes ‘to Oyster Bay. —_— Mr. Lind’s wild joy over.the pros- pect of trying to be elected gover: nor on the democratic ticket isn’t likely to keep the neighbors awake nights. —_— AIMOST PATHETIC. With the hope that causes a starv- ing man to grasp at a cheese straw, the democrats grovel at the feet of John Lind and piteously beseech of him to murmur the one: little word that would fill their hearts with joy. But instead of being the gracious, obliging hero they had' hoped ke might be, John isn’t a hero at all just about now. Put your foot on the soft, soft petal—don’t be rude; say it ever so gently: John Lind isa lemon. Poor old headless, aimless' Demo- cracy! Verily the days of thy Day are numbered. And the number is twenty-three. STEVENS T0O0 G0OD TO LOSE. Over in the Sixty-second legisla- tive district A. D. Stevensis fighting to retain his seat in the state senate. Mr. Stevens is a Crookston bank- er and has twice represented his his district, which is made up of Polk county, in the upper house at St. Paul. It is important' to northern Min- nesota that Mr. Stevens be‘retained in his present position so that he may continue to expect his powerful influence in behalf of this part of the state. His record is clear; his reputa- tion established. To defeat Senator Stevens would be a blow felt far be- yond the confines of Polk county. GOODBY, RICHARD. It doesn’t must matter whether the full committee alters the report made at Minnespolis Wednesday, so far as Mr. Ballinger’s future place of residence is concerned. The secretary of the interior may be a much abused man and he may not be guilty of all the things charged against him—which in- cludes almost everything, except murder and of being an insur- gent—but the fact remains that he has reached the parting of the ways. The road he is going to take now leads to Seattle and private busi- ness. The administration has long enough been embarrassed by his unfortunate presence. So long, Dick. There's no use telling you to take care of your- self—you always do that. AGOOD PAIR TO BEAT. A. L. Hanson and D. P. O’Neill are traveling double and they are a good pair for the voters to beat. Mr. Hanson lives in Ada and in the state legislature represents this district or rather part of it. Bemidji and Beltrami county is not in the territory so favored. Whenever Bemidji wanted any- thing Senator Hanson was con- spicuous by his absence. But to return to Mr. O’Neill, who seeks to go to the house from this district. He lives- in Theif River Falls. He wont" get enough votes in Beltrami county to choke a canary, but the fact remains that he is hooked up with Hanson. He stands for county option as the paramount issue. So does Hanson. He isn’t right on reapportionment, Neither is'Hanson. He wouldn’t boost for Bemidji if he were to be elected. Hanson never has and never will. Albert L. Berg of Spooner stands for the things Bemidji and Beltrami stand for. Reapportionment and a square deal above all other things. Iver Krohn- of ‘Sheylin - opposes Mr. O'Neill for the republican- nom- ination to the house and like Mr. Berg he is “right” on the-real issues of the campaign. CENSUS SHOWS INCREASE ‘OF CITIES: “The Census Bureau has, up 'to this date, announced the population of twenty-five cities, having a- popu- lation of over 100,000 inhabitants each. All but seven of these cities made a greater absolute increase of population in the decade 1900 to 1910 than in the preceding decade, 1890. The seven exceptions com- prise Buftalo, Grand Rapids, New Haven, Paterson, Pittsburg, = St. Louis and Toledo. In the case of twelve cities the precentage of increase as well as the absolute increase was - greater be- tween 1900 and 1910 than between 1890 and 1900. The population of New York City is 4,766,883 in 1910, as compared with 3,437,202 in 1900, and a population for the same area of 2,507,414 in 1890. This repre- sents an absolute increase of 1,329, 681 from 1900 to 1910, and 929,788 from 1890 to 1900. The percentage of increase was 38.7 for the last decade and 37.1 for the earlier, a slightly accgleraked rate of increase. The most striking acceleration in growth perhaps is that shown for Atlanta, Ga., which increased 72.3 per cent in the last decade as against an increase of 37.1 per cent between 1800 and 1900. The former is the highest percentage shown in any of the cities of over 100,000 thus far announced. Hardly less remarkable is the case of Detroit, Mich.,, which in- creased 63 per cent in the last de- cade as against 38.8 per cent in the decade between 1890 and 1900. Denver increased 59.4 per cent in the decade ending in 1910 as against 25.4 per cent for that ending .in 1900; Kansas City, Mo., increased 51.7 per cent as against 23.4; Newark, N. J., 41.2 per cent as against 35.3; and St. Paul, Mion., 31.7 per cent as against 22.5. I BY THE WAY | If a man doesn’t know when he is well off, the chances are he isn’t. When woman gets her rights she will be man’s equal instead of his boss. The man who tells you to “be a sport” wants you to stand being robbed without kicking. No matter what happens there is always the consolation that it might have been worse. If science advances much faster there will be so many things to guard against that the present generation cannot take comfort, COMMUNICATIONS. Letters to the editor of not more than 200 words on topics of interest are solicited. The names of the writers must be signed, but not necessarily for publication. Scores Commercial Club: Editor Pioneer: - If you will kindly permit me space in your valuable paper I will make a few brief comments on the plan just started by the Commercial Club of Bemidji to stop the drainage system in this part of the county. ‘Will first say that if the Commercial Club is successful in carrying out its object it will be the cause of the greatest injustice to hundreds of poor settlers in this district. These settlers came here ten or eleven years ago to establish permanent homes, but if they had known what hardships and privations they had to face it goes without saying that the Honorable Body that is now planning to forever darken their fondest hopes would never have had a chance to do so. If the plans to stop the drainage pro- ceedings go through this will be as desolate acountry as before the reservation was opened, but it would not surprise me nor any of us up here if these ditches are denied us. Itisa well known fact that this part of the country has been sadly neglected ever since it was first settled. We have hardly known where or what part of the world we belong to and it is only twice a year that we are aware that we are citizens of Beltrami county and that is when we are told our taxes are due or when we get a letter from some- body soliciting our-vote for some office. One of the gentlemen belonging to the Commercial Club has- said that they all believe in drainage but -that he, for one, did not believe in draining one- peat bog into another. That does not apply to this section and no sane person would advocate such a thing. It is stated both by the government suveyors and' the state that this is some of the finest land under the sun for drain- age. There is a good fall here and if we could empty the big Marshall ‘county. ditches and into the Thief River I'fail to see where the emptying of one peat bog into another comes in. Also the statement' that ' where roads could not be built that drainage would be inadvisable. This is far from " correct”so far as conditions here are concerned. We all know our indebtedness: and I ‘admire anyone who tries to get us‘ out, but I think the " present' movement would ‘be false ecomomy.. - Itell you, as sure as you gendmurp walking under God's ‘blue sky that the effect ofyour work will be that honest homesteaders who' have: DON'T GIVE your child = “teething” powders or “goothing syrup” or ‘“quleting drops.” Such things often contain “dope.”-They are almost always dangerous. Clean out the cause of the trouble with Kickapoo - Worm - Killer, the - gentle, safe laxative, system cleanser, liver stimulant and general health-builder for children. Price, 26c, sold by druggists everywhere, and.by many years of their lives here, and with drainage theironly hope, will be compelled to sacrifice their homes and move away. ‘We poor settlers will have to pay the fiddler and if Beltrami county money had been as profitably invested as the reclaim- ing of land the county would not have such a deplorable financial condition. 0. P. Hanson, Carmel, Beltrami Co. Sept. 3. Testing His Scales. “Thank heaven James has quit call- ing me Baby!” said the woman who weighs over 200 pounds. “A strange butcher shamed him out of it. It was done unconsciously too. That is why it was so effective. Since I began to diet I have been weighed often. The other day when James was buying liver for the cat he remarked that bhe wished there were reliable scales in the neighborhood to weigh Baby on. “Said the butcher, ‘Bring her down here.” ““Thanks,’ said James; ‘T will." “James told me the butcher was ex- pecting us, so we went. He was ready for us. He had rigged up a nice little shawl arrangement suspended from the hanging scales to put baby in, and then he was introduced to—me -James hasn't called me Baby since.”’— New: York Times. Lucky Dog. “My wife Is excessively fond of her poodle. Actually, I'm beginning to look on it as a sort of a rival to me.” “Say, you're lucky. I'm only a sort of a rival to my wife's poodle.”—Kan- sas City Times, POLITICAL ANNOUNCEMENTS Announcement.
