If the lads of Bemidji knew just what the “Boys Scout” movement meant it is more than probable that a patrol or two would be organized ina jiffy. The clear, cool, pine- perfumed air of northern Minnesota brings out all the stirring qualities of adolescence, — sometimes to the distraction of fond parents. The Boy Scouts plan seeks to in- corporate this “‘energy plus” into a foundation for manhood that will send the boys up against the world splendidly equipped to fight the battles of life. ‘“‘Semper paratus” (always prepared) is the motto. Clean, healthy and well muscled bodies and unclouded brains is the first achievement of the Boy Scout. During his successful career as an actor Dick Ferris has had at least two wives, one of whom was and is, known as Grace Hayward. Dick boys could make gond as scouts and and Grace fell out after a few years of more or less happy married life and were divorced. This summer Grace has been at the head of a stock company playing at the Metropolitan in Minneapolis. On her opening night, from the crowd which filled the theater, came a covey of eggs that had seen better days. That explains why Richard wrote the following: To the the Editor of the Dispatch: On the first page of your issue of July 20, under the caption of “Threw Eggs at an Actress.” which has just been brought to my attention, T note the lady refered to assigns the act to me. 1 judge she was evidemly interviewed, or such a state- ment would not have been allowed to enter your columns, and Irespectfully and earnestly ask that you do me the justice to print an emphatic denial. Neither myself, nor my friends, would Dbe guilty of such indecorous action, how- ever warrantable a theatrical performance may be. There are at least more gentle- manly means of expressing one’s dis- satisfaction. So far as I am personally concerned in this particular instance, I don't think it would be possible for me to throw an egg 2,000 miles, although there might be some pride in the achievement. DICK FERRIS. Los Angeles, Cal., Aug 24. Even Grace must admit that Dick seems to have the better of the argu- ment. — WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT. More than 4,000 persons in every part of the United States, have been appointed as delegates to the Na- tional Conservation congress which will convene for a five days’ session in the St. Paul ‘auditorium on next Monday morning. “Conservation congress” conveys the vague idea that speakers are go- ing to get up and tell how to make trees grow into orderly, well behaved forests that refuse to topple and tumble at the beck and call of cap- tains of industry, preferring instead to rear their branches heavenward for the benefit ot posterity. That is an erroneous impression for conservation, as it will be ex- emplified at the St. Paul meeting, will mean a gathering of dele- gates urging protection from the ravages of insects; others seeking light as to how old soil can be made into new and still others who will call attention to the ruthless slaugh- ter of game. of representatives from the 61st sen- atoral district which comprises the counties of Beltrami, Clearwater and Red Lake. Bemidji is to send down to the state fair a few bunches of the six-foot corn that grows in that vicinity. Not so many years ago we had an idea .that Minnesota was just a little too far north to raise corn, but gradually it was demon- strated that just as good corn could be grown in southern Minnesoea as in Iowa. Later it was discovered that it could be raised successfully further north and it has been planted and gathered year after year uatil soon it will be grown way up at Hudson's Bay.—Stillwater Gazette. INCREASE IN LUMBER RATES Dealers’ Associations of Several States Protest. Chicago, Sept. 1.—Representatives of lumber dealers’ associations of Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri and Illinois met here to formulate a pro- test to be submitted to the interstate commerce commission against an in- crease in the lumber rates on rail- roads. In the past the trunk lines in the Southwest have paid a portion of their through rates to the originating lines, but recently filed notice of cancella- tion to become effective Sept. 24. The lumber dealers believe that the cancellation should not be sanctioned unless the trunk lines reduce their through rates, as pocketing the divi- sion hitherto made with the originat- ing lines will be equivalent to an in- crease in the average rates. The lumber dealers say that the present rates on lumber are higher than on other commodities, and that any increase would be an unjust bur- den on the consuming public. A. E. Rako.
