At an election of the city of Be- midji Thomas Maloy was elected to the office of clerk of this municipal- ity, and as such the public is justly entitled to look upon him as a public servant. A reporter for the Pioneer called upon Mr, Maloy today for informa- tion regarding the council proceed- ings of last night. Mr. Maloy re- fused to give out any information on the ground that he was “too busy,” and when the reporter insisted Mr. Maloy calied for a policeman to come and eject the representative of the press who was trying to secure information which the public is en- titled to have. As a czar Mr. Maloy has “Uncle Joe” Cannon beat a mile. The spectacle of a public official refusing to give legitimate information about the public’s affairs is about the most astounding piece of self constituted authority that a man in his ordinary senses can well imagine, and is a pretty good indication that Mr. Maloy’s days of usefulness are drawing to a close. THE LAKE FRONT STREET. Bemidji is to be congratulated on having at last smoothed away the difficulties which have pre- vented the opening of the new lake street. The attitude of the Minnesota & International railroad toward the city in permitting it to lay out the thoroughfare on its right of way is an act in behalf of the public which should be appre- ciated. The benefits to be'derived from the new street, and the op- portunity it presents. to ultimately make ita ¢show place, are too apparent to need discussion. If the wind keeps’'up it is ‘apt to give the newspapers some hot stuff. — John Lind, champion' sphinx of the world, is expec-ed home this week. Tomorrow is the last day for candidates to file and .the next day the oyster season opens. It is neck and neck between the Sao railrood and the Third street . paving as to who will get there first. Jimmie Jones will resume the name of James and a pair of shoes and stockings next Tuesday at g a. m. If Mr. Biorge writes -any ‘more of that kind of poetry he certainly ought to be sent to congress, or somewhere. POLITICAL ANNOUNCEMENTS Candidate for Sheriff. I hereby announce my candidacy as a candidate for the Republican nomination as a member of the house of representatives from the 61st sen- atoral district which comprises the counties of Beltrami, Clearwater and Red Lake. If nominated and elected I pledge myself to use all my efforts to secure the re-districting of the state, a one mill tax for good roads, a literal appropriation to advertise the resources of Minnesota and a county option law. D. P. O’Neill. THE LIFE SAVING EXHIBIT. If there is any way by which the 2,300 lives which are being claimed annually in Minnesota by tuber- culosis -can be saved the public should know it, for it is the public which is in peril. Therefore, widespread interest should be manifest in the coming series of lectures and exhibits to be Fomnhire Wit held here early in October. I notice by the Pioneer that communi-| 1st, tions on any subjects would be welcomed so I am going to take advantage of the opportunity to say a few things about our electric lights. Generally speaking I am a mild man- nered man but that isn’t the way I feel every night when the lights begin that St. Vitus dance along about eight or nine o'clock. For awhile you can't tell whether they are coming or going, and you hold your breath for fear they are going. It don’t seem right that the lights should blink around every night just when peo- ple want to read. J.V.R. Who’s Been Shooting Wild Game Here? That “wild duck” dinner served to county officials at Cass Lake interested me because I thought that if these men were convicted maybe the law could be enforced in Beltrami county, too. Since everybody went scot free, what's the use? “Disgusted.” Nothing Is Too Good for Bemidji. Your paper of last Saturday containing a review of the candidates for congress in Minnesota was worthy of a bigger town to the term of office for which I may be elected, should I be the choice of the Republicans of this district and be elected in the general election in- November next. Chicago, Aug. 30.—That the general business of the country will sail along as smoothly as can be wished from this time is the opinion of James B. Forgan, the Chicago banker. Mr. Forgan, who has been a close observer of conditions and financial affairs for many years and who ranks as one of the shrewdest financiers in the United States, declares that busi- ness has reached a normal basis again and that all danger of a serious money stringency for crop moving purposes and the like has passed, along with the fear that there might be further depression. FOUR OF THE CREW MISSING Probably Perished When Schooner Goes Ashore. Newport News, Va., Aug. 30.—It is reported here that the two-masted schooner Williams, bound from Nor- folk to Baltimore and brick laden, toundered in Chesapeake bay three miles from Seven Foot Knoll. ASIATIC CHOLERA REAGHES GERMANY Several Cases Reported fo the Authoritles. Berlin, Aug. 30.—The death of a ‘woman and the illness of her husband and of a male attendant at the hos- pital at Spandau, all suspected of cholera cases, has caused the health administration of Prussia to take the most comprehensive precautions against a spread of the infection. Professor Lentz, chief of the bac- teriological bureau of the government institute for infectious diseases, says that unfortunately there is no doubt that the suspected cases at Spandau are cholera, the origin of which has not been traced. Farreaching meas- ures are being taken to prevent a spread of the disease. Result of Old Family Feud.
