| | SISTERS PERISH WHILE BATHING Elder One Drowns in Effort to Save Younger. —_— ta STEPS INTO DEEP HOL Luella Walton of Crookston, Aged Fif- teen, Gets Beyond Her Depth and Grace, Aged Nineteen, Swims to Her Rescue, but Is Pulled Down by Drowning Girl—Treacherous Hole Has Claimed Other Victims Here- tofore. i Crookston, Minn,, Aug. 12.—Grace and Luella Walton, sisters, nineteen and fifteen years of age, daughters of Louis M. Walton of this city, were drowned in the Red Lake river. The two girls, with Mrs. Eugene Barrette, were in bathing back of the E. M. Walsh residence in Highland P Luella, who could not swim, slipped into a hole beyond her depth while wading. Grace swam to rescue her, but Luella gripped her so tightly that she could not keep afloat and both went down. Neither reappeared and Arnold Kassar, after repeated div- ing, brought Grace to the surface an hour later. Grace Walton was a schoolteacher and also taught music. Luella had not yet graduated from the high school. The parents are frantic with grief and the mother is in a serious condition. The girls were drowned in the same treacherous hole in which a Brown boy of Grand Forks lost his life last Fourth of July. Mr. Walton is head miller for the Crookston Milling company. CAUSED BY DEATH OF MULE Strange Reason for Run on South Louisville Bank. Louisville, Ky, Aug. 12.—A mule’s death was responsible for a run on a South Louisville bank. A depositor had purchased the animal, giving in payment a check for $75. The animal died a few hours later. Suspecting that he had been “stung” the purchas- er stopped payment. i The payee presented the check just before the bank closed and payment was refused. He left, spreading the report that the bank had ceased pay- ment. More than one hundred depositors were in line seeking to withdraw their savings when the bank opened the next day. By noon the real cause of the “run” had been learned and it stopped. GENERAL MONTEAGUDO. Leader of Cuban Troops Against the Insurgents. SENATOR BAILEY ENDORSED Texas Democrats Favor Submission of Prohibition Amendment. Galveston, Tex., Aug. 12.—After en- dorsing United States Senator Joseph W. Bailey for the Democratic nomina- tion for president in 1912 and nom- inating a full state ticket, headed by Oscar B. Colquitt for governor and A. B. Davidson for lieutenant governor, the Democratic state convention ad- journed. Both Colquitt and Davidson are anti-prohibitionists, notwithstand- ing the fact that the party declared in favor of the submission of a pro- hibition amendment. FOREST FIRES OBSGURE SUN Burning Fiercely in Lally Lake Region in Montana, ‘Whitefish, Mont.,- Aug. 12.—Forest fires in the Lally Lake reglon have taken a serious turn and now are burn- ing more fiercely than ever after three days of hot, dry weather. Smoke is so thick that it completely: obscures the ‘sun. Livingston, Mont., Aug. 12.—The re- port that disastrous forest fires were burning in Yellowstone National park has been thoroughly investigated and it is learned that no fires of a serious character are raging. Several small fires-have been under way far from the route taken by the transportation companies. These are now all under control. The fires are believed to have been started by lightning. Game is being driven into the valleys below the fire region, the animals apparent- 1y losing their fear of man. TROOPS WILL FIGHT FIRES Battalion Ordered by General Wood to Missoula, Mont. ARMY SAFE CARRIED AWAY Thieves Secure $6,500 of the Govern- ment’s Money. Cheyenne, Wyo., Aug. 12.—An army paymaster’s safe containing $6,500 was stolen from the maneuver camp ' For Bemidji ? 100, how the main point in the question is missed. A man went into his local store, to purchase an axe. =The dealer showed him one, the price of which was $1.20. The customer paid his 95 cents, plus 2 cents for postage, 3 cents for money order, and 25 cents express charges, bringing the total charges to $1.25.
