J. J. Curran, pastor of the Holy Savior Catholic church, arose early and made himself at home on the big porch which surrounds the parochial resi- dence. He read the papers and com- mented on the beautiful mountain scenery. John Mitchell, who is also the guest of Father Curran and who spent many months in Wilkesbarre while directing the big miners’ strike of 1902, pointed out to Colonel Roose- velt the many places of interest in the ‘Wyoming valley. Colonel Roosevelt, John Mitchell, Lawrence Abbott and about forty oth- ers were Father Curran’s guests at luncheon. At 4 o'clock the ex-presi- dent and party left in automobiles for Bear Creek, where they were the guests of Albert Lewis, the million- aire lumber king, at dinner. Angered because, as they claim, the yillage sehool officers snubbed them, the women held indig- nation meetings -apd determined to defeat the men at the election. A sex war was fought to a:finish in which man was completely over- whelmed and routed. ‘The women voted to increase the number .of school trustees from one to three and then proceeded to elect women to' fill these offices, as well as those of clerk| and treasurer. WOODEN STEAMER WRECKED Plerced by Bow of Steel Vessel Near Seattle, Seattle, Wash., Aug. 4—The steam- er Chippewa rammed the old .wooden steamer Albion off West Point, north of the entrance to Seattle harbor. The Chippewa was returning to Se- attle from Everett after carrying an excursion party to Vancouver, B. C., and back and had no passengers. Ten passengers, bound for Everett, were aboard the Alblon, but as far as known none of them was injured. The hull of the wooden vessel was pierced by the bow of the heavier steamer ‘and the two were wedged tightly together. The passengers on the Albion, which will likely be a to- tal 'loss, were transferred to the Chip- pewa. Meager reports indicate that the damage to the Chippewa is not se- rious.
