REFUSES TO COMPROMISE “Peerless Leader” Is on the Scene and Proposes to Stand Out for the In- sertion of His Plank in the Platform. Mayor Dahlman of Omaha Seeking the Nomination ' for Against Shallenberger. Governor Grand Island, Neb., July 27.—Will famJ.'Bryan has arrived in Grand Isi- and ready for the /(fight of his life against the allied Democratic leaders who are prepared to dethrone him at the Democratic state- convention now in session here. | 5 " Even the Populists are opposed to Bryan, and the Populist platform, which 1is already ' written, does not mention the name of Bryan and coun- ty option is absolutély ignored. Mr. Bryan refused to be interviewed, but T._S. Allen, his brother-inlaw, spoke for him: “We do not concede that we are de- feated; on the other hand, we claim that we are in control of the situafion. We have won over many delegates and we are getting stronger every minute. Mr. Bryan will accept no compromise, but will stand out for ceunty option, and we believe we will win.” Dahiman Seeks Governorship. Mayor Dahlman 6f Omaha, now ar- rayed against his former political leader in the pending county option contest, headed alarge delegation from Omaha which’ Joudly proclaiméd the candidacy of Mayor Dahlman as- a successor to Governor Shallenber- ger. The headquarters/ of Congressman Hitchcock of Omaha and Richard L. Metcalfe of Lincoln, candidates for the nomination of United States sena- tor, were. crowded during the morn- ing and much partisan feeling was evinced, although the convention will take no action on the candidates for state and national offices. IN CONVENTION AT LINCOLN Hot Fight Among the Republicans of Nebraska. Lincoln, Neb., July 27.—Anti-county option and standpatism were squarely aligned against progressiveism and county option when the Republican state convention was called to order. Congressman George W. Norris, re- nowned as the man. who assaulted Cannon, was pushed into the fight by his friends for the permanent chair manship.. Senator Norris Brown, sup- ported by the reactionaries, and Sena- tor Burkett and National Committee man Rosewater, opposed him. Brown wanted to be both permanent and tem- porary chairman. He was selected for the latter position by the execu- tive committee. Victor Rosewater started a fight for a meaningless - county option plank. He also wanted - endorsement of the national administration. The progres- sives were not disposed to quarrel with the administration, but 600 of the 800 delegales are pledged to county option. Paternal Fortitude. I was calling, when the little daugh- ter of my hostess came into the room. Knowing that her mother’'s mother had that morning returned home after a somewhat lengthy visit I sald: “Weren't you sorry to have grandma go away, Pearl? “Yes, 1 was,” she answered prompt- ly. “and so was mamma-—very SOITy. But,” and she paused thoughtfully for a moment, “I couldn't see at breakfast but that papa was just as cheerful as ever.” $100 Reward, $100, Tie readers of this paper will be pleased ta learn that there is at least one dreaded disease that sience has been able to cure in all its stages, and that is Oatarrh. Columbus, O., July 27.—The state Republican convention opened Wwith the contest for the gubernatorial nom- ination as wide open as it ever has been. One of the day’s developments was the adding of the name of James R. Garfield as one of the possibilities. That of Judge O. B. Brown of Dayton, who has the support of Chairman | George B. Cox of the Cincinnati dele- gation, was not much in evidence. It was stated that the field now consists of Mr. Garfield, Warren C. Harding, former lieutenant governor, and Car- mi Thompson, secretary of state. The “keynote” speech was given by Congressman Nicholas Longworth as temporary chairman. MINNESOTA R S | — m——— ‘Winnipeg, July 27.—Charred cinders and ashes fell all day on Calgary, Al berta, from the fierce forest fires near Morley, fifty miles distant, where the Eau Claire Lumber company’s val- uable limits on Ghost river are burn- ing fiercely. So intense is the heat and the clouds so thick that the fire rangers and fighters battling on these limits are powerless to check the de- struction. A late dispatch says the Lineham Lumber company’s limits on Sheep creek, near High river, are on fire and the whole foothills country is ablaze. FIRES IN THE BLACK HILLS Large Force of Men Fighting Blaze Near Spearfish, Deadwood, S. D., July 27.—Although the month of July has seen much more rain than earlier in the summer the Black Hills are so dry that forest fires are of frequent occurrence and the forest force is devoting most of its efforts at present to putting out a number of fires. The worst fire at present is in the picturesque Spearfish canyon, where | it has been found necessary by Super- visor Kelleter to establish a camp. He has nearly 100 men there fighting the flames, which are almost inaccessible, owing to the particularly hilly and || steep nature of the country. Another Fire Near Seattle. Seattle, Wash., July 27.—A bad for- est fire broke out near Preston, twen- ty-five miles from Seattle, and has as- sumed such alarming proportions that the Washington Forest Fire associa- tion is sending all its available rang- ers to the district. The fire started from a small blaze in the camp of a lumber company. Confess to Many Burglaries. Canton, O., July 27.—Because they wanted to be “bad men” and also needed money to treat their “sweet- hearts,” John Warner and Ray Met- calf, each eleven years old, commit- ted 600 burglaries.
