The Buffalo millwrights have asked for an injunction to restrain Buffalo carpenters from goifig on a strike. That’s the kind of labor trouble the capitalists can enjoy. Those who classify themselves as “Roosevelt men” will please note that their idol has decided to keep still for two months, Imitation is the most sincere praise. ‘What do the teachers who have been preparing them for profess- ional career think of the fact that at a graduating dinner fifteen of the girls exhibited engagement rings. Chief Kobler of Cleveland. has been acquitted ‘and returned ‘to duty. He says he will continue to run the police force for the benefit of the city, and has no wounds to heal. Good; but those who opposed him will do well to walk straight. Col. Roosevelt’s remark that he might never talk on politics again recalls the famous scene in ¢Pina- fore:’ CHORUS: “What! SIR JOSEPH “Well, hardly ever.” Never?” PORTER: In discussing the question of sali- aries to professors, the New-York Herald makes the point that:they should at least have as much wages: as the janitor of a first-class flat, because there are no tips attached to a job as a professor. HOW:TO TEST A MAN. “Play cards with a .man for an hour and you will know him-better: than if you had met him in the drawing room every evening for a year,” says a German writer. But “Sonia” in a resent number of Figaro suggests another character barometer. A never-failing test is the hotel room. The way a man arranges his room in a hotel shows whether he has been well reared, what his ideas of propriety are, whether his bump of order has been develpoed, whether he is methodical or slovenly, and one may even know by the way wearing apparel, ornaments and baggage are dis- posed of in a room which the occupant knows he will remain in only a few days whether he is thoroughly or superficially educated. “If I had 4 daughter for whom a young man sued,” says “Sonia.” "I would have him go toa summer resort. where I could surprise him in his: hotel room: In- less:than: 15 minutes my verdict: would be ren- dered on the basis of the' room’s appearance,” BY THE WAY If Mr. Morgan finances the Turk< ish railroad, don’t look for reduced rates. In the way of a surprise party a Michigan woman is in the lead. She went away on a visit, and on her return found her husband had pro- cured a divorce and ‘married again., Married men are skeptical of the story that there-is a woman in a New York factory who cannot close: her jaws. A woman. getting off a street-car can hardly be classified as making a'move in the right direction. PASSENGER. FARES GO UP Lehigh Road to Discontinue the Two- Cent Rate. New York, July 9.—The Lehigh Val- ley Ralilroad ‘company has.announced that as a result of the recent decision of the Pennsylvania courts in the case of the Reading Railway company against the county of Philadelphia' to enjoin the county from enforcing the 2-cent fare law of 1907 the Lehigh would restore the old passenger rates which prevailed onthat line:prior to Oct. 1, 1907, The Lehigh company, it says, com- plied with the 1907 law under protest, because of the large penaities whih: it would suffer for non-compliance in case the law should be upheld. Tariff schedules based upon the old passen- ger rate are now being prepared by the Lehigh Valley and it is likely that they will be put into effect.about the middle of this month. Teething children have more or less diarrhoea, which can be con- trolled by giving Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. MAY RUN FOR. GOVERNOR Congressman: Havens: Would Lead New: York Democratsi Rochester, N. Y., July 9.—James H. Havens, the Democrat who defeated George W. Aldridge for the Thirty- fourth' congressional district seat, left vacant by the death of Representative James Breck Perkins, has been re- peatedly urged to reconsider his de- termination not to run for congress again this fall, but he still firmly re- fuses to allow his name to be consid- ered. “How about a nomination for gov ernor?” he was asked. “Well, that is quite another mat- ter,” he replied. “A nomination for the governorship of the state of New York on the Democratic ticket is in honor of which any man would be proud. However, I do not think any- thing will come of the talk of my. can- didacy.” Chamberlain’s Stomach and Liver Tablets gently stimulate the liver and bowels to expel poisonous matter, cleanse the system, cure constipation and sick headache. Sold by Barkers’ Drug Co. Changed His Mind. A gentleman who once served on an Irish jury tells ah amusing story of his expeclences. When the hearing was over:and the jury retired:to their room to oonsider their verdict they found that they stood eleven to one in favor of an -acquittal, but' the one-happened to be a very complacent old gentleman who rested his chin upon the head of a thick bamboo cane and announced de- fiantly that he was ready to stay-there as.long as any of them, The hours dragged on, evening ar- rived, and the old gentleman obstinate- ly held out. The other jurors wearily | erranged themselves to make a night of. it. From tlme to time the old gentle- man would' contemplatively suck the head. of ‘the: cane. Finally. he fell asleep, and the cane dropped heavlly to the tloor. Then one of the jurymen picked it up ana* found, to his: surprise, that it was-nearly fall of Irish whisky. The eleven passed the cane round, relleved it of its con- tents and then awakened its slumber-| Ing owner. Slowly he lifted the cane ‘to ‘his mouth, looked at his watch and ‘then arose with the announcement, “Boys, I'm afther changin’ me moind;” ~Loudon. Telegraph.
