HOW TO CONSERVE TIMBER. The timber supply in the United States, by a conservative estimate, will be exhausted in fifteen years at the present rate of consumption. The denuding of our forests upon agriculture alone cannot be estimate- ed. During the year 1906.6,000,000 trees, approximately, were used as piles in docke-and in foundations; 3,249,124 were used for telegraph poles and for electrical transmisson; the number of cubic feet of round timber used in mines was 20,000,000 and the number of railroad cross ties used was 162,535,900. The total cost was $100,729,483. The above figures represent only .partially_the annual consumption of, the timber which could be saved by the intro- duction of concrete and steel com- bined. There. are in the United States inexhaustible deposits of rock.which by means of scientific and mechani- cal methods can be converted into a cement which in combination with sand and stone, reinforced. by steel, are indestructible to decay and fire. This combination is practically a new , commodity -and . will,. in. the course of time, take. the. place of: timber for the. purposes heretofore stated. The civil goverment. . has .done| ably in systematic public aid to agriculture and the time now seems ripe to extend its activity to this new industry—the develop- ment of our natural resources which heretofore have not been used, .| GOVERNMENT ,WINS . In an interview announcing his can- didacy Mr. Payne said: “I expect to be a candidate for re- election and 1 shall take active part in the campaign, both in New York and elsewhere. I have been invited by the congressional committee and by the state committee and will give them all the time that I can.” To the question whether the tariff would be the issue he answered: “Yes, the tariff and the good work done in congress will undoubtedly be the issues everywhere, and in this state will overshadow state issues in .my judgment.” “President Taft,” Mr. Payne went n, “if to be congratulated for the gen- eral results of the first sixteen months of his administration.
