Of course the steel interests, as«well as the lumber and other trusts, are opposed to conservation; and it is easy to see who is pulling the wires thatmake the Twin City dolls dance. Let’s all join hands for a sane Fourth, John D. Rockefeller over paid his Ohio taxes taxes by two cents. ‘That makes his gifts to charity to date $150,000,000,02. The young lady in Boston, who has fallen heir to $50,000 says that it is causing her a great deal of worry. She says that she does not know how to spend her money. That’s nothing: few people do. Our editorial asking that news be given us instead of waiting until we can look it up brought results. News has been coming into the office steadily this week and much of it has been given us voluntarily. We apprecite this and hope that it will be continued. We want every read- er to feel that this is bis paper and see that we get all the news that is around. Here is a funny old fool: A Tennessee farmer blessed with grey whiskers lay down behind a log, carefully and skillfully stuck his whiskers (like a squirrel’s tail) out beyond it and barked like a squirrel to deceive a hunting companion. Net result, all the whiskers shot away and a face full of bird shot. These are the pauses in the rush of life’s events that add flavor. P — Some of the Twin City papers took the speech made by Gifford Pinchot in St. Paul last Sunday and read into it the establishment of a third party . with Roosevelt as the head. Then a day or two later, they took keen delight in censure- ing Pinchot in strong editorials for daring to suggest such a thing. The truth of the matter is that the reference was made by the chair man of the banquet and not Pinchot, About the same time, despatches were sent out from St. Paul saying that Pinchot said he had converted Louis Hill to conservation. It ap- pears now that Hill is not converted and that Pinchot never said that he was, These are but two instances of certain papers trying to discredit certain men before the public. Time and again, they have concocted startling news stories out of nothing, credited them to individuals “who have a happy habit of standing by the people, and then in editorials, rap the ideas that originated in‘their own heads. Gifford Pinchot has done much of Mrs. Charlton. Como, Italy, June 15.—The police have almost despaired of getting any clue to the murderer of Mrs. Mary Scott Charlton, whose mutilated body, Jammed into a trunk, was fished from Lake Como on last Friday, from Con- stantine Ispolatoff, the Russian sus- pect under arrest. Ispolatoff - was in the “sweat box” nearly all night, but all to no avail Not once did Ispolatoff show the least embarrassment or confusion, Ispolatoff’'s defense was so strong that the detectives suddenly switched their tactics and told him that they were convinced that Charlton killed his wife and asked whether he could not furnish them with_the clue of the murderer. Aside from saying that he knew Charlton was jealous of his wife and frequently worked himself into a frenzy through heavy drinking, the Russian threw no additional light on the case. Colon, June 15.—News reached here that President Madriz has taken Es- trada’s remaining port, outside of Bluefields, in the capture of Cape Gracias by the remnant of his army under General Vasquez. . Sharp fighting is reported, but it is not believed the casualties were great, as Estrada had but-a small force sta- tioned at the cape. Cape Cracias is on the Honduran border and it is declared that Hon- duran soldiers aided the Madriz men in attacking the Estrada garrison. The armed steamer Venus is also said to have effected a junction with Vas- quez. With the capture of Cape Gracias the only Estrada port now open is Bluefields and this could be easily closed if the United States govern- ment would permit, President” Madriz has sent-a mes- sage to President Taft protesting against the action of the American commanders, saying it was due to their interference that Bluefields was not occupied immediately after the fall of the bluffs and custom house. Madriz’ message says in part: “I am unable to reconcile these facts with the principles of neutrality pro- claimed by international law. I be- lleve, however, you will modify the naval commander’s orders that this bloody war may be ended.” Lame shoulder is almost invari- ably caused by rheumatism of the muscles and yields quickly. to the free application of Chamberlain’s Liniment.
