Gardner, the local repre- . | sentative of the Grand Forks Lum- ber company, went down to Pine River this morning to look after some of the company’s business there. Everett, who is engaged in the real estate business, departed yesterday morning for Emo, Ontario, where he will look after some prop- erty. Mr. Everett expects to be gone about a week. A. A. Smith, a well known resi- dent of Kelliher, and F. C. ‘Johnson, editor of the Kelliher Journal, were among the north country arrivals on this morning’s train. William Burce, who looks after the interests of the Crookston Lum- ber company in the vicinity of Blackduck and Kelliher, came down this morning on the M. & I. train for a short consultation with the head officers of the company in this city. A. C. Klein, a well-to-do merchant of Akley, came up last evening on the Sauk Centre train to meet his brother, H, E. Klein, a St. Paul commercial traveler, who was in the city. The brothers enjoyed a few hours’ visit and Mr. Klein returned to Akley this morning. F. J.. Bosworth of Devils Lake, N. D, arrived in the city early this morning and went across Lake Bemidji to Lavinia where he pur- chased the Irish cottage. Mr. Bosworth is one of the prominent - |residents of Devils Lake, and will bring his family to Lake Be- midji to spend the summer months, in company with other North Dakota people who find attractions in this vicinity during the hot sum- mer months, Carpets, rugs and lienoleums. G. - Rutledge of this city returned last night from Aitkin, where he reported the Paul Fournier trial for several of the big papers of the state. Mr. Rutledge, whois secretary of the North Central Minnesota Editorial association, association, went down to Walker this morning to confer with Brother Dare and complete the program’ for the annual meeting and outing of the association, which will take place this year June 4, at Walker. FLOATING DRYDOCK SINKS The Dewey Goes Down in Seventy Feet of Water at Manila. Manila, May 25.—The floating dry- dock Dewey, which was towed from the Atlantic seaboard to Manila, a wonderful feat, was. sunk here in seventy feet of water. The valves had been opened and for some unac- countable reason could not' be closed in time to prevent the mammoth dry- dock from sinking. 1t is believed she can be raised, but her intricate machinery is probably ruined. PORTION OF CITY BURNED Anti-Foreign Demonstration at Chuan- chia, China. Shanghai, May 25.—Native riots oc- curred at Chuanchia, thirty miles northwest of Changsha. A considera- ble portion of the city was burned. The Luthéran church was destroyed by fire. The general unrest and anti-for elgn sentiments are spreading. Peru Accepts Joint Mediation. Washington, May 25.—The govern ment of Peru has formally accepted United States, Brazil and Argentina in the boundary dispute between Peru and Ecuador. ‘wichout reserve the mediation of the better taste.” MAY HAVE INTENDED BOMB FOR ALFONSO Anarchist Drops Explosive on Street at Madrid. Madrid, May 25.—The premature ex- plosion of a bomb near the monument to the memory of the victims of the bomb explosion in 1906, as King Al- fonso and his bride were driving to .| the palace, is believed by the police to have prevented an attempt on the life of King Alfonso, It was at first re- ported that tne anarchist who dropped the mob, a man named Callemayor, had thrown the bomb at the monu- ment, but the police are now con- vinced that he intended the bomb for the king and was on his way to the palace when the bomb was accidental- ly dropped. 8t. Paul Pioneer Dead. St. Paul, May 25.—Word has been received by Stephen C. Gook of the sudden death of his father, John B. Cook, president of Cook’s Transfer company and one of the oldest resi- dents of St. Paul, in Alameda, Cal. Mr. Cook, although he was in his ninety- third year, was apparently as healthy as a man of half his age and he made the trip West alone. SEIDEL TALKS TO MINISTERS Mayor of Milwaukee Makes a Redhot Address.
