THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER PUBLISHED EVERY AFTERNOON EXCEPT SUNDAY BY THE BEMIDJI PIONEER PUBLISHING CO. E. H. DENU. Q. E, CARSON. Eatered u the Postoftice at Bemid)l, Minesota, as second class matter, SUBSCRIPTION---$5.00 PER YEAR IN ADVANCE S Without wishing to butt into things with undue haste, one cannot help mentioning that Colorado, a state that boasts of female suffrage, is one of the worst governed, accord- ing to Judge Ben R. Lindsley, the famous “Jungle” jurist. The reports from Jeffries’ training quarters must be sent outin part to affect the betting. They are contra- dictory, and no one not on the inside can get a certain line om the big man’s condition. One day heis a wonder of agility, strength, endur- ance, speedfand quick: hitting power, and other reports follow represent- ing him as an old man, all in, and helpless against his strong, young adversary. The political dope given to the voters of this state for digestion is rather changeable. It is amusing to read the mixtures handed out by some of the Twin City dailies. Those dailies speak of the candi- dates for lieuienant governor. One day they have one candidate in the saddle with the full republican hosts shouting themselves hoarse in their wild enthusiasm, when low and behold the very next issue contains an article with another aspirant riding in this same saddle, having thrown the one time favorite and making the same spectacular ride toward the capital. The same might be applied to the candidates seeking the office of state treasurer. A little more consistancy would aid materially to the prestige of the political prognasticators of the Twin City Dailies. The strength of the republican ticket in this state lies in the proper distribution of the candidates. The north is deserving of at least two and possible three. It has practi- cally settled its-self upon A. Kaiser for state treasurer and should settle on the others soon. CENTER OF POPULATION. Where will the center of popula- tion be when the new count is completed? Will it succeed in mov- ing out of the state of Indiana where it has been for some time? Will it be able to move very far north or south of a line approximately the thirty-ninth parallel of latitude, the line that connects Baltimore and Cincinnati? The first census located the center of population 23 miles from Baltimore. It has been moving westward ever since. In 1900 it was near Columbus, Ind., about 40 miles south of Indianapolis. It had moved westward only 26 miles in that decade, which shows a remarkable balance in growth of population between the east and its big cities and the west and its prairies. This center of population is about a quarter of the distance from the Atlantic to the Pacific, showing how much fuller ‘the eastern section is than the western. The vast growth of the eastern cities has continued and is sufficient, it is be- lieved, to keep the center from traveling far west as a result of the growth the past 10 years.
