Sam Cone, he of the grave coun- tenance, arrived in the city last night for the purpose of securing orders for “Laughlng Water” among the local refreshment dealers. - Sam asserts he has just returned from his pork inspection trip to Jerusalam. The bull is for the improvement of dairy stock in the Battle River country, where the farmers are be- ginning to engage in dairying toa large extent. Parties (farmers or others) who are in the habit of leaving their teams in the middle of the street, or near the middle, would do well to stop the practice. In case of fire, the fire team would be greatly im- peded in trying to run with the apparatus among a lot of wagons and other “junk”—and then, some- one’s horses might be injured. “A word to the wise.” W. B. Smith, who lives at Hamer, N. D., was a visitor in Bemidji yes- terday afternoon and last evening, leaving last night for Minneapolis. Mr. Smith is a taxpayer of Beltrami county, owning a valuable tract of land on Pimush lake, in the south- eastern part of the county. Mr. Smith stated to the Pioneer that he was about to sell a strip of the land along that lake to Chicago parties to be used as a hunting and fishing reserve. A. E. Schusser and his sister, Mrs. Wm. Lennon, departed . yester- day afternoon for Red Lake Falls, having been called to that place by the death of Joseph Schusser, a brother of Mrs, Lennon and *“Tony.” Joseph Schusser has been seriously ill for more than a year past, and his death was not unexpected. The deceased was 42 years of age, and is survived by a wife and two children. Mateszalka, Hungary, March 29.— Two hundred and fifty people were killed and many others injured in the village of Oekoerite when fire broke out in a hotel where a ball was being held. A coachhouse connected with the hotel had been fitted up as a ballroom and was crowded with several hun- dred guests when the fire started. The flames were first noticed when & woman’s dress was seen to be ablaze. A moment later the. gowns of several other women were burning. Panic followed and in a mad rush to the exits many persons fell and ‘were trodden to.death. As if to make matters worse the roof caved in before the hall could be cleared. Many injured persons and those who, because of the crash at the doors, had been prevented from escaping, were buried with the dead in the ruins. Richmond, Va., March 29.—Profes- sional cracksmen rifled the postoffice safe here, taking, it is said, $40,000 in cash and stamps. Washington, March 29.—No official report of the robbery at Richmond, Va., has been received by the chief postoffice inspector. The postoffice at Richmond is the depository for all the fourth class and presidential postoffices in the state of Virginia. Remittances are made to the treasury at Washington every few days. Officials here say that if $40,- 000 has been stolen it represents a few days’’ accumulation of the remit- tances of the smaller offices. Fires Threaten Wisconsin Village.
