APPROPRIATELY OBSERVED Services in St. Phillip’s Church; Pro- gram at City Hall.—Life of St. Patrick. St. Patrick’s Day will be observed in Bemidji. High mass at St. Phillip’s church, 8 a. m., with a little instruction on his life. At8 p. m.,, musicale by junior and senior choirs, at City Hall; address by Hon. B. F. Wright. - (By Rev. John O’Dwyer, “pastor St. Phillip’s Church, Bemidji.) * St. Patrick is often said to have been born in Scotland, but the general belief is, or rather the weight of authority goes to show, that he was born in Brittany, North France. When 16 years old, he was stolen by pirates and sold to an Ulster Chieftain, He tended sheep on the hills of Ulster for six years, and in the meanwhile became acquainted with the Celtic language, which afterwards he used so efficaciously on the conversion of Ireland by the true faith. After six laborous years, he made his escape to France, where he entered St. Martin’s Abbey; later on he entered the Monastery of Leurs, where he was consecrated - bishop. Then he proceeded to Rome, to ob- tain the papal benediction of Pope Celestine, in the year 432. Celes- tine saw in St. Patrick a man of God, and gladly bestowed upon him the apostolic benediction. St. Patrick was wont to say, dur- ing his preparation for the priest- hood in France, that he had visions of little children, yet unborn in Ire- land, raising their tiny hands and supplicating him to come amongst them and teach them the true faith of God. St. Patrick obeyed, because he saw here “Digitus Dei,” the finger of God, and the extraordinary happiness of seeing the whole nation converted to the true faith, ere his death in 493, without a single drop of blood being shed. Died at Blackduck. C. S. McCurry of Osakis died at the Palace hote] in Blackduck, yes- terday, death resulting from an attack of pneumonia, aftera week’s illness, the disease being very severe in its form.
