The spirit that will keep Northern Minnesota forging ahead, that will overcome all obstacles and over- throw all handicaps, is the spirit of a common interest such as that displayed by W. R. Mackenzie of Bemidji, chairman of the Northern Minnesota Development association, when he said: “I believe that the time is not far distant when it will be shown that the ultimate market of Northern Minnesota is Duluth. The interests of Duluth are identical with those of this entire northern section. Her sympathies are with us, and we owe it to the Zenith City to co-operate for our mutual benefir.” If that typifiss the spirit of the gathering to be held Feb. 17 and 18 at Bemidji, it will crystalize northern Minnesota sentiment into an effective force that will make it historic.—The Valley View. [BY THE waAv. The reason that some advertising is so hard to write is because it’s an attempt to tell what isn’t, instead of what is. It is not the advertiser who uses the most space, it is not the adver- tiser who uses the most papers that gets the greatest results, but it is he i who appears most regularly with fresh news and presents it in an intelligent manner, FOR IMPROVING TS LINE 8oo Will Spend Eight Millions During Present Year. FIVE MEN LOOT BANK OF TEN THOUSAND Gag Night Watchman and Git- izen Who Interfered, Bloomington, Ill, Feb. 16.—The safe of the Citizens’ bank of Chatsworth, near here, was looted or $10,000 in cash by five masked men. The robbers es- caped after binding and gagging a night watchman and a citizen who at- tempted to interfere. The robbers drove into town from the west shortly after midnight and held up William Kayle, the night watchman. Kayle was bound and gagged and taken to a garage across the street from the bank, where he was left in charge of one robber, while the other four broke into the bank. Al- bert Kerben, a -citizen, was also tied when he attempted to prevent the rob- bery. The robbers worked on the safe for an hour and had to use four charges of nitroglycerin before they could break it open. The safe was entirely “cleaned out,” the robbers getting about $8,000 in bills and about $2,000 in gold and silver. After placing the money in sacks the robbers drove north in a two-horse rig. The sheriff believes the robbers came from St Louis. A St. Louis newspaper, dated last Sunday, was found in the ruins of the safe.
