Thief River Falls News: Very few of the readers of the St. Paul and Minneapolis daily papers know what intereste are the. owners of these organs. A St. Paul gentleman who is “on the job” gives some inside information reza}dinz the recent sale of the Pioneer Press and Dispatch which is authentic. - He says: “There has been a great deal of speculation here in the last few days relative to the significance of the sale of the Dispatch and Pioneer Press to George Thompson. The most plausible explanation, and the one generally accepted, is this: “The Eastern Democrats, in the anxiety to eliminate Bryan if possible from the next presidential contest decided to pick a western man, and coached Johnson to make the play for the west, promissing him Eastern support for the nomination at least. “To play this game properly it became necessary to have some papers act as the official organs of Johnson, so the money was advanced and Grasty sent to St, Paul to take part in the fight. The Minne- apolis Journal was also subsidized and the Duluth News Tribune and the Minneapolis Tribuue 'were to be later coralled. “When Govenor Johnson died, of IN FEDERATION OF LABOR Liquor Question Has Become a Live Issue. Toronto, Ont;, Nov. 16—Liquor and its effect upon the workers, as well as its influence on the trade union move- ment, has become'a live issue in the American Federation of Labor because of the pronounced stand taken upon the lecture platform and in the publie press by Rev. Charles S. Stelzel fra- ternal delegate to this and three pre- ceding annual conventions,.from the federated council of tue Church of Christ in America. Matters were brought to a head by the announcement of a meeting:in the Toronton Labor temple at which' labor’ and the liquor saloon is to be dis- cussed. The representatives of the United Brewery Workers and the Hotel Em- ployes’ and Bartenders’ league, under the Jeadership of Jere Sullivan of the latter organization and Edward Hirsch of Baltimore, have been making prep- arations to combat the influence of Rev. Stelzel. For some months past Sullivan has been printing attacks upon Rev. Stel- zel in the bartenders’ official journal. These attacks have gone so far as to charge that the preacher was in the pay of the Anti-Saloon league. It was these attacks to which Rev. Stelzel referred by inference when he said in his address to the convention' en Thursday: “I have mever received one penny from any source other than the organi- zation which I represent here.” WHEN HER BACK ACHES, A Woman Finds All Her Energy and Ambition Slipping Away. Bemidji women know how the aches and ‘pains that come when the kidneys fail make - life a burden. Backache, hip pains, . headaches, dizzy spells, distressing urinary troubles, all tell of sick kidneys and course there was no further need of the papers so far as the Democrats were concerned, but certain East- ern republicans, included in which were some of the Aldrich crowd, paid the Democrats what they had put in, Grasty pulled out and we shall soon have regular Aldrich- Cannon organs in our midst. “The last part may not be true, as some claim that Johnson raised enough money to take the proposi- tion over, first deducing what Grasty bad realized from the sale of the Pioneer Press manufacturing plant and the building. “But I believe that the Johnson | deal is O. K. If the Stalwarts do get big boosts from the P. P. and Dispatch, it will look as if the other story had some foundation— but where do the ‘peepul’ come in?” CAUSTIC COMMENT. ~ (A. G. Rutledge.] They have stolen the president’s ’possum. Let us hope they will not get his “goat.” Christmas comes on Saturday this year, but that does not prevent shop- ping on all the Monday, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and other week days that come before it. - Mr. Taft has picked up a good deal of inside information about the gastronomical sesources of the country, around among the “folks.” The International Pure Food Con- gress defines whisky by saying that “it comes from the distillation of port prepared by the saccharification of cereals by means of malt and then fermented.” Whew! We never knew it was really so bad as that. According to statistics recently issued, more than 200 persons have been killed in automobile “accidents in this country since January 1 last. Not all of them, unfortunately, were speed maniacs; and in any event this method of extinguishing the speed maniac is too slow. BURNING WHISKY RUNS WILD Rivulets Cover Ten-Acre Field Whsn Distillery Burns Down. Cincinnati, Nov. 15—Rivulets of burning whisky flowed out over a ten- acre field in Mill Valley creek back of the HBdgemont Distilling company’s plant when a fire which began in the elevator of the big whisky manufac- tory spread over the entire building in a series of loud explosions. I caused a loss estimated at $300,000. Firemen from all the volunteer de: partments in the valley and several Cincinnati companies responded to a |, call for aid from the Carthage depart- ment. 4 Three persons were slightly injured- One man, William Theobold, a’ volun-~ teer, had a miraculous escape from death. Doan’s Kidney Pills . per- manently cure all these disorders. Here’s proof of it in a ' Bemidji woman’s words: Mrs. A. Van Vard, 1218 Bel- tramian Street, Bemidji, Minn., says: “I have used Doan’s Kidney Pills with satisfactory results and can truthfully recommend them to any- one suffering from kidney complaint. For some time I had a dull pain in the small of my back which! caused me much discomfort. Other symp- toms showed that my kidneys were disordered and were the cause of my suffering. I atlength saw Doan’s Kidney Pills advertised for such complaints and deciding to try them, I procured 2 box at the Owl Drug Store. I used them carefully as directed and the pains soon dis- appeared and my kidneys became strong. I am confident that the re- lief I received from the use of Doan’s Kidney Pills will prove permanent.” For sale by all dealers. Price 50 cents. CETS AFTER INSURGENTS Pays His Compliments. to Senators Cummins and La Follette and De- nles That He Obstructed the Little- field ~Temperance ' Bill—Denounces as False the Charges of a Deal Be- tween Himself and Tammany. Bloomington, IIl, Nov.! 15—"Uncle Joe” Cannon, in a speech here, deliv- ered the most bitter excoriation of his enemies he has yet uttered. The sensational feature of the ad- dress, however, was the. speaker’s dec- laration that Herman Ridder of New York: had offered him the support of the metropolitan papers for the presi- dency if he would do their bidding. Cannon’s address was the feature of the annual banquet of the Bloom- ington Business Men’s association. The. failure of the newspaper publish- ers to get the tariff removed from ‘wood pulp, he declared, made Cannon- ism an issue. Herman Ridder, president of the American Newspaper Publishers’ asso- clation, he asserted, headed a deputa- tion which went to Cannon and de- manded that he railroad through con- gress a bill which would make print paper free of duty. Alleged ‘Promise of Reward. In return for this service, declared the speaker, he was to have had the support of the big newspapers of the country for the presidency. Cannon declared he emphatically de- clined to be “bought or cajoled” and that the deputation of publishers, with Ridder at its head, “then went after his scalp.” This was only one of the many top- ics “Uncle Joe” touched on. He de- nounced a leading Chicago newspaper and dared it to publish verbatim his speech. On the heads of United States Sen- ators Cummins and La Follette he poured the vials of his wrath and he branded by the shorter and uglier word the charge that he had obstruct- ed the Littlefield temperance bill. The speaker .also paid his respects to Herbert Parsons of New. York and denounced as false the charges of a .deal between himself and Tammany congressmen. ~ FOR GONSTIPATION A llquieir__ng that Does Not Cost Any- thing Unless It Gives Satisfactory.
