| THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER PUBLISHED EYERY AFTERNOON EXCEPT SUNDAY BY THE BEMIDJI PIONEER PUBLISHING CO. C. J. PRYOR. C. E. CARSON. A. G. RUTLEDGE, Editor. Enterod In the Postofflce at Bemld]l, Mianesota, s second class maiter, % SUBSGRIPTION---85.00 PER YEAR IN ADVANCE The Hibbing Daily Tribune has made its appearance, being the issuing of the Hibbing Tribune six times a ‘week, instead of twice a week as bas been the policy of the paper heretofore for some time past. The new Daily Tribune is well- edited, full of news, and “'printed on the range, and devoted to the range.” Here’s success to the Daily Hibbing Tribune. An exchange is fearful that Governor Eberhart is falling in with bad companions and advisors, and says: *‘Gov. Eberhart has more to fear from the two or three notorious politicians who are just now making it their business to tell him how to be governor than he has from all other causes, conditions and co- horts.” They indicate a county official every day or two in Beltrami county.—Hibbing Tribune. This “is indeed startling news. Some of our county officials were indicted—but to be “indicated” is a misfortune that is terrible to con- template. Maybe this is what they did to the official printer during Brler Hitchcock’s regime with the Pioneer., The Lake City Republican says of the so-called “human interest” man- ner in which the merger papers, the St. Paul Pioneer Press and the St. Paul Dispatch, are being conducted under the supervision of Mr. Grasty, the present owner of both publi- cations: “If yousee itin the Dispatch in the evening you see it in the Pioneer Press in the morning, and if you see it in the Pioneer Press in-the morn- ing you see it in the Dispatch in the evening—only the headlines are changed. Editorially they are both reaching out for the elusive dollar.” CAUSTIC COMMENT. (A. G. Rutledge.] And Dr. Cook appears to have a wife with a cranium lined well on the inside with a very high order of brains. While theshorter and uglier is being passed around, let it be remem- bered that Mat Hensen was Cook for Peary. As a diamond expert, we prefer “Babe” Adams, the Pirate pitcher, to Kaiser William, who poses as an authority on the “white stones.” A Cleveland woman is suing for alimony because her husband has 100 pipes. Good case. She is en- titled to half of the pipes. . Fifty are enough for any one man. “Something ought to be done to the city water,” declares the Mil- waukee Sentinel. The experience of Bemidjites is that something fine is continually being done to the Milwaukee city water—the kind that makes that city famous, and which comes to Bemidji in bottled form. If a man is, for any reason, un- able to trace his ancestry or to gather data for his autobiography, he should announce himself asa candidate for the republican nomi- nation ‘for governor of Minnesota. Judging from current events, he would be furnished the desired information, with neatness and dis- patch, if not enjoyment to the re- ceiver. FAIL TO Burglars GET INTO VAULT Attempt to Rob County Treasurer’s Office. Stillwater, Minn.. Oct. 21.—An at- tempt was made to rob the Washing- ton counly treasurer’s office in the courthouse here, but the robbers got Tothing. The burgl , in their attack on the vault, knocked off the combination lock. The door weuld not yield to the charge of nitroglycerin they used. About 3 o'clock in the morning Miss Ollie Peterson, sister of the wife of the sheriff, Oscar Ostrom, heard a noise in the courthouse which she thonght was an explosion of gas. She awoke her sister and the sheriff, who, in his night clothes, tried to reach the courthouse by a door which connects the jail with that building, but he fouac the keyhole plugged. . He then went through a basement window and gained the treasurer's office. There was ample evidence that an attempt had been made to rob-the vavit. The search that followed failed to reveal the robbers. OFFICIAL PROCEEDINGS of the County Commis- sioners of - Beltrami County, Minnesota. HER CHARGE PARTLY TRUE Wife Accused Husband of Misconduct With Two New York Women and the July Upheld Her in One In- stance—Suits Aggregating $1,500,- 000 Against Miliionaire Father of Plaintiff Likely to Be Dropped. New York, Oct. 21.—The jury before which Mrs. Frances Work-Burke- Roche-Batonyi bronught suit for divorce from Aurel Batonyi, the Austrian horseman. returned a verdict in favor of Mrs. Batonyi. This verdict follows upon two years of charge and counter charge between the daughter of Frank Work, the New York millionaire, and Batonyi, who has been associated with wealthy horse fanciers since he came to this country in 1899. Mrs. Batonyl sued for diverce on statutory grounds, first alleging at least ten instances of un- faithfulness. At the trial, however, she withdrew all but two charges, in- volving her husband with two New York women. A long night ride in a taxicab with one of these women and a night spent in the apartments of the other were the allegations behind these charges. The jury found the charges that Batonyl misconducted himself with Margaret Allen, or Lillie Lawrence, in the latter’s apartments on Central park west on Dec. 19, 1907, are true. The jury held that the charges of misconduct with Lillian Brevaine, the “fencing girl,” wara not proven. As the result of the verdict suits for damages aggregating $1,500,000, brought by Batonyi against Frank Work, father of his wife; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Cooper Hewitt and Frank K. Sturgis for conspiracy and aliena- tion of his wife’s affections, will prob- ably be droppcd. Arbogast Jury Completed. St. Paul, Oct. 21.—The jury to try the case of Mrs. Mina Arbogast, ac- cused of killing her husband, was ccmpleted at the morning session of court and in 'the afternoon County Attorney O’Brien made his opening statement. Witnesses were then called to establish the corpus delicti and the balance of the afternoon was devoted chiefly to showing the fact and manner of Leuis Arbogast’s death. Boy Killed by Elevator. Minneapolis, Oct. 21.—Chester La Pray, sixteen years old, was crushed to death in a freight elevator in the establishment of the Lavoris Chem- ical company.
