Entered In the Postoffice at Bemid]l, Minnesota, as sscond class matter. SUBSCRIPTION---$5.00 PER YEAR IN ADVANCE DEMOCRATS LOOKING FOR A MOSES. George F. Authier, political writer for the Minneapolis Tribune, says of the efforts being made by the democrats to fix their choice .on a candidate for governor: “Democrats are greatly at sea, relative to a candidate for the gov- ernorship. They propose to play a waiting game, for the purpose of seeing what the republicans will do, and in the meantime, may be expected to do what they can to stir up whatever troubles may exist in the Republican household, with a view of making their own task the easier. “There is a unanimity of opinion that if former Governor John Lind of Minneapolis could be induced to be a candidate, he would be the strongest man they could nominate. “W. S. Hammond is a second choice with most of the leaders, J. G. Armson of Stillwater comes next, with Daniel Lawler a possibility, local to St. Paul. Mayor J. C. Haynes is not generally considered as a possibility, now. ““The democrats, incasting uptheir accounts, find that Congressman Hammond would make an ideal candidate. They say the tariff will enter largely info the campaign. “Congressman Hammond is the natural exponent of the low tariff idea in Minnesota, having defeated McCleary in one ot the strongest Republican districts of the state. Of all the men in the Democratic ranks, he is conceded to be the strongest speaker on this question. *“One argument urged against the St. James man is that heis not a good ‘mixer.’ That he lacks the cordial handshake and the winning smile, that made Johnson so power. - fulon the stump. They are also dis- inclined to take him out of the second district fight where he could probably be elected, they think, an opinion in which Congressman Ham- mond joins. DIFFICULT TO PLEASE EVERYBODY. There never was a preacher, poet or politician who could please every- body. There never was a tinker or tailor, soldier or sailor who could suit us all. Show us a doctor, merchant or lawyer who pleases the whole multitude. The Lord him- self and all the angels have never half succeeded in comforting the human race. There is not a thing or earth or anywhere else that meets the approval of all mankind. Then it would be nonsense for editors to fret when their houest efforts fail to please a certain few. Write with sound judgment, and honest pur- pose and a decent pen, and the majority of sensible people will rise and call you blessed. A DAY’S WORK. “What constututes a day’s work?” We figure it out that it depends on your occupation. If you lay brick, eight hours; if you keep house, sixteen hours; if you preach the gospel, two hours; if you are a porter in a sleeping car, twenty hours; if you serve the government, one hour; and if you are a newspaper man, twenty-four hours. —_— CAMPBELL BUYS SILK HAT Texas Governor Breaks Precedent for Taft Visit, Galveston, Tex., Oct. 15.—Governor Tom A. Campbell of Texas established 8 precedent when he ordered a silk hat to wear upon the occasion of meeting President Taft en the bor der. It is the first time In history for a Texas governor to appear in public wearing a silk tile and in fact it is the first beaver worn by Governor Campbell. So pleased was he that he suggest- ed the idea to Secrelary of State Townsend and other state officials. who likewise invested in silk head- gear and long-tall coats. BANDITS FRIGHTENED AWAY Attempt to Rob National Bank at Shakopee, Minn. Shakopee, Minn., Oct. 16.—Two rob- bers made a bold attempt to rob the First National bank in this city about midnight. They were frightened away by lights in the rooms of D. W. Daye, a dentist living on First street, directly across from the bank and by the approach of the night watchman. They escaped and the police have no clue. There was about $20,000 in the vault of the bank and had the robbers been undisturbed they undoubtedly ‘would have reached the cash, as their work bore all ths ear marks of pro- fesionals. YANKEE DOODLE STOGK G0. HERE NEXT MONDAY 'Will Begin Three Nights’ Engagement.| : —~Company Comes Well Recom- mended.—Has Fine Plays. The Yankee Doodle Stock com- pany open a3 days engagement next Monday night at the City Opera House. This is the best} Repertoire playing the middle west. and gives a continous performance vaudeville and music between every act for the opening night. The company will. produce, Mark E. Swan’s great comedy drama |‘The Princess of Patches,” one of the cleverest repertoire bills ever written, besides being a study in types and characterization that is almost in a class by itself. The story deals with the fortunes of Selma Silverthorn, a child stolen in infancy from a life of luxury on her father’s plantation and subjected to cruelties and hardships by a half breed ex-slave, Judas, in revenge for a fancied wrong. At the opening of the piece the little 12-year-old Selma, seemingly clothed only in a barrel and afraid to return to her brutal kidnappers because someone had stolen all her clothes at the swimming hole, comes to her uncle, the trustee of the fortune that was left in his charge for her in case she should ever be found, and begs for protec- tion from Judas, and with the old school southern chivalry toward femininity in distress he adopts her without knowing who she is and raises her as his own daughter. The originality of this situation in view of the fact that everyone of her relatives is interested in the search for the kidnapped heiress makes the plot of the Princess of Patches alive with interest and thrilling at every turn: The great house boat scene in the third act in which her cousin tried to gain her fortune by attempting to kill the little Princess, being an almost con- tinous session of breath suspending situations.
